Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

I can do without the eggs. I get way more eggs than I need. My problem is I just can't free range chickens where I live. Too many predators. I wouldn't have a chicken left in a week. I live in the woods and its infested with predators. So I can't outgrow my run by adding chickens. I probably have room for a couple more but I would rather have too few than to have too many. The way I am set up right now requires about five minutes of my time each day and I have clean happy chickens and more eggs then I know what to do with. Its more fun when its not like a job. If its still this much fun in the spring I might expand the size of my run and get some more birds. At that point I would probably get some fertile eggs and let the broody hatch them. I'm sure that would be a great experience and lots of fun.

Makes perfect sense actually. I had wondered what I was going to do with all the chickens hatched this year, I had no idea they'd start in February..but the predators have solved that problem, plenty of room now. Some roos may have to sleep outside, I will let them decide. The worst I could do is crowd them all in together confined in a small place. A few will have to go in the freezer, but I'm not decided on who yet. Building another coop is on the agenda, 3 months to count down.

FIVE TODAY WE LAID FIVE. (Actually Six one got broke and they ate it but I saw the evidence. Broody hen still trying to hatch her golf ball)

I have one that seems to be testing out the broody thing. Sitting all day on a golf ball or someone else's egg or NOTHING, but no egg from her. Pulled her off the nest late afternoon and carried her out to the chicken yard, and she seemed so happy. Ran around and scratched and ate, but when I went to lock up later, she was back on the nest. Very determined to sit on those invisible eggs!!

My hubby took some eggs to work to share, and folks have offered to pay for more! Woohoo! Couple dozen more and I'll have paid for this month's feed. Maybe I'll splurge and buy them a bale of alfalfa (expensive out here in CA). Although I suppose they'd really rather have... oh you know..... PIE!

Haha very funny OK! Really is. Pie can be shared too, the chickens don't need to know its leftovers! I got my rooster back and swapped bad boy for him, I think the vacay did Capt good, he's being quite the gentleman, I think those hens were too pushy for him. First thing they did to the new roos was pluck him in the head...now he has the adjustment...he just stood there saying, wow I have to behave myself. It's a better match all around, he then started offering them some corn he found and they just walked away, like fool, we don't need your corn. Well there are ten of them, same breed and all, he'll adjust. Capt has his hands full keeping the young roos in line..order is restored. Yea!

I have a 14 year old boy I'd like to have live with those hens for a week or so!

Maybe adjust his ornery attitude and give his dad and me a break!

(Actually he's a pretty good boy. Probably just growing pains.)
