Should I buy this hen?

I have always been afraid to of purchasing animals at auctions. I think like you do. I think their either sick or near death's bed.

I have never purchased an animal from an action for fear of bringing home something to my flocks,

I bought 7 adults at Mt Hope this past spring. While there I picked up 5 adult birds from Legg and my Midnight B/S from Hopkins. When we got home all birds was kept in their selling boxes for no less than 2 days, some 3 before they were introduced to their breeding pens at Pea Palace. At the end of May I brought home 4 BSSP breeding aged birds from Bigcreekpoultry, roughly this doubled the size of my flock all within a months time. Not one was sick, not one came down with an illness and none of my home raised peas came down with sickness.Maybe it's luck? Maybe it's saying something about the sellers? I did see birds for sale tho that had twisted toes,or a white spot or cyst by the eye.I personally spent a few hours first locating males I was interested in buying, then going back looking for healthy hens to buy to make up a breeding trio-quad.

I think the moral is if you go to an auction you should have a little knowledge of peafowl so that you can correctly identify things from what you know regardless of what the seller is saying. Some people get their first peafowl at an auction without any problems, but it probably would be safer to know a bit about peafowl before going to an auction and buying some. I love those stories of people getting some nice bird at an auction for cheep. I bet that is dreamy. XD I haven't been to an animal auction before. I would like to go just to see what it is like.

Minx fox,the auctions here are great ! Why? Because you can get great deals and find birds you might want without shipping fees and you might meet someone that may help you later on find that special bird or birds. That's enough for me right there. There wasnt much this last one Ill admit. Although my son did buy three adult male ringnecks for 2 bucks a piece. (We'll probably eat em) but not bad price huh. Also if you have to know who the seller is you can generally find out. If a seller is selling bad birds it gets known pretty quick anyhow. Yes I do quarentine for standard procedure. Some have sold for next to nothing while other times it freaked me out how high they can go in a bidding war. Its a crapshoot. Sure you gotta check em out good before you buy but for the most part they are healthy. Its mainly justexcess birds or people tire of them. I wish we had a monster one like the MT hope one frenchblackcopper. It must be unreal.

I hate to admit it but the auctions/sale barns here in my area are scary. I would NEVER purchase an animal at our local actions or sale barns. Most of the animals look horrible and look sick.

I have purchased animals from a couple people from BYC in my area and I know that their animals are healthy and that they take excellent care of their animals, so I am never worried about any problems when getting animals from them.

There are some people that stop by my house and offer to give me some of their animals or barter and I always say no. First off, I notice how they take care of themselves so I can imagine what their animals look like. :/ If you can't take care of yourself and your own hygiene or your kids, how can I trust that you are taking care of your animals. Just my opinion. :/

Yea some things like MG and coryza can become carriers by birds that have recovered from the diseases and transmitted to the egg and if you don't know the owner or the bird you could unknowingly infect your entire flock and if you sell babies from these birds you can spread these illnesses and god knows we all have seen enough pea deaths.

How would that work with your NPIP status anyway?

The birds I got were from others who are NPIP. That's another reason I don't and can't get birds from other NON NPIP people.

Same here all my birds came from tested flocks even the saddest looking ones i got a while back.

But you still have to be carefull folks break the rules and buy untested birds and put them with their tested flocks, i watch for that and do not buy from them either.
