should i caponize my little chick

yeah this girl said they become mean to hens and sit on eggs all dat
Capons will not sit on eggs.

In rare cases, they will brood baby chicks. Around 1910 or so, farmers would use a capon to take care of baby chicks so the broody hen could go back to laying eggs. This was before modern incubators and brooders were developed!

They are not mean. They are like sissy chickens. They are usually lowest in the pecking order below the hens.

Capons need very secure housing, because they will not fight back against predators.

Lol, think my meaning was misconstrued a little bit happens often no big whoop.
When I said they hen fight I didn't mean they do the fighting.
I ment they spend all day fighting as a hen would, getting pecked and having feathers yanked.
The abuse drives them straight into the nests where they tend to stay in my experiences with them.
I figure its like hiding in the bathroom.
I still firmly stand by my.sad as hell statement.:)

Anybody that is as advanced with chickens as to caponize probably puts the capons in their own (very secure) pen so they don’t get bullied to death. And, they probably have a large number of chickens they are raising for very traditional, old-fashioned meat.

Happens a lot more in places like France or Spain....

This subject really isn’t for beginners or anyone who hasn’t already butchered a chicken. That’s why the capon thread is in the Meat Birds ETC section.
