So I have six 6-8 week old silkies that have been infested with mites. We have been treating them with Poultry Protector and VetRx bathing them and spraying the brooder, but the problem seems to be getting much worse. I we now have a severe infestation. We recently gave them a bath and notice the accumulation of 100's if not 1000's of mite eggs around there necks. At this point I am unsure what to do in order to protect my babies, as well as the rest of my 16 fully grown chickens who are constantly scratching around underneath the chick brooder.
I am concerned with the brooder that might be providing a lot of protection for the mites. My neighbor gave me and old wood cage he had constructed for his rabbits he no longer used and I rewired it with some chicken wire and put a new leak proof roof on it. It is a stand alone structure with 4x4 wood legs. The wood is weathered and has a lot of cracks and splits in it.
Is it possible to eliminate the pest problem without destroying my current brooder?...and If I construct a new brooder would I just be providing the mites a new save haven to continue to plague my chicks?
thanks!
