Should I drop the word Hatchery and replace with Breedery?

Which is a better title for my company?

Hello everyone,

So, I was hesitant to put the word Hatchery into my company's name, because their associations with being puppy mills of the poultry world, but I found the name most fitting. It is too expensive to ship large birds, and eggs are too unreliable to sell because of the possibilities of not hatching, and hatching birds not worth selling. I have felt that breedery would be much more fititng, because that is what we do, we have a thorough vetting process and not letting a lot of chickens breed or sold because they do not meet our standards. But, breedery is not a common word, so I decided to go with hatchery, because it is specific to chickens, therefore I could omit the word chicken from the title, and that I almost exclusively sell chicks because older birds take a lot longer to raise, and the shipping is $100 plus per bird.

Do you think it is more fitting for me to change the name to Breedery, or keep it as hatchery?

Personally, I'd feel that breedery sounds more like a puppy mill, BUT I'm very beginner at this with very little background. I'm reluctant to even respond since it appears that I'm first and don't want to give you the wrong impression. I'm just some guy that has no specific image in mind when I hear "hatchery," or "breedery."

On a general PR note though, as a consumer, I am generally weary of companies trying to create a space in an already established market by making up new words or standards, so I think that you using the term hatchery is better in that regard.

Thank you for your input. You have some great points and are well-articulated. The thing that drives me crazy, is that in this industry, if someone wants a specific BREED of chicken, they will say, I want to contact a (insert name of variety here) BREEDER. I am going to go to a farm (not a breedery). Which doesn't make sense to me. A farm has wheat and goats and sheep and all other farm animals and produce. Not specifically chickens. I only have chickens for sale, so why would I not be a chicken breedery? That is refreshing you have no hard feelings about hatchery though. I have gotten some flack about it from some friends in the industry.

If I were eaves dropping on two people having a discussion on the bus, or in a restaurant and the word "hatchery" came up, I'd instantly have an idea of what they were talking about, with zero connotation either positive or negative. If the exact same conversation happened and they instead used the word "breedery" I'd have to eavesdrop longer in order to infer the meaning from the context of the rest of the conversation, or assume that they were some hipsters discussing some passing hipster trend.

Again, I'm just one guy though.

Thank you, that is useful. That is why I wanted to include hatchery in the name, so it was a clear representation of what the company was in the business of. But do you think that breedery is something that is catchy and draws attention, or that it is a negative?

I would actually call it Vivid Heritage Poultry or Vivid Poultry. I shop Canada wide from poultry breeders I always avoid the ones who put Hatchery in their title. I give some of them a look, but 90% of the time they are a hatchery

Most breeders have no more than 5 breeds that they specialize with. I find breedery very off putting.
Hatcheries hatch thousands of chicks every week are you going to be hatching that many a week?
You could call your operation Vivid Poultry-Specializing in a select few breeds.

First, re: farm. Farms can be very specialized or very generic. Where I come from, there are potato farms, dairy farms, strawberry farms, Christmas tree farms. All are legitimate businesses, and all are FARMS. There are also farms who produce a wide variety of livestock or vegetables. Then, there are the "wanna be farms" of which I am one. I raise chickens, sell a few hens, a few eggs, a few chicks. Have an orchard, and a fairly good sized garden. "Little Town Farm" is my farm title, even though I do not in any way, shape or form, consider my "farm" to be a "real farm".

Hatchery indicates that you sell chicks. Are you NPIP? Have you researched what other regulations are involved in becoming a legitimate hatchery?

Breedery? Never heard of such a thing. If I was looking for chicks, I'd be looking for a hatchery, or perhaps a breeder of the specific breed I was interested in buying. However, I'll be honest and tell you that IMO, the term "breeder" has been beat into the ground by "wanna be" breeders who buy a few birds and start pumping out a bunch of "pure bred" chicks, and they sell everything they produce, regardless of the quality. They do not have the education to make good culling and breeding decisions, and put little effort into improving the quality of the animals they produce. This goes for chickens, dogs, or any other animal.
