Ive never had a broody hen before. I want to get some black australorps, but Ive heard they can be broody. Should I get them, or should I get a non broody breed. I have no roosters, so does it matter if I get a broody breed?

Ultimately, that decision is up to you. In my opinion, there isn't anything sweeter than watching a momma hen with her chicks. Anyway, just because you get a few birds from a breed that are known for broodiness, there's no guarantee any of those birds will actually go broody. Especially if your chickens come from a hatchery, as they focus mainly on production. So, if you get a broody breed and one of those hens wants chicks, there are options. One option, purchase some fertile hatching eggs (they can be found on Craigslist and ordered from hatcheries) and let her get to it. Another option, put her in a wire bottom cage with no bedding or dunk her bottom in some cold water (weather permitting) to break up her need to sit. Broody hens don't lay eggs, so if your looking for high egg production, then perhaps a broody breed isn't for you. Good luck with your decision!
