We received a week old chick from a friend and had her in the brooder on her own. (ours were old enough to be in the coop) She did not do well on her own, she chirped nonstop and then became lethargic. After putting her with our flock she immediately began to thrive and is a quiet girl.

Talk to your mom about her social needs and look into getting a bantam if size is an issue.

Absolutely, ours seem to LOVE being together and even get upset if one is separated. Especially our duck, that thing may not even know it is a duck! I believe it thinks it's a chicken that swims. But seriously they do love to group/play and explore together
