Should I get a Roo?

If the noise is not a problem, then I would get a Roo or Two that should do for you. I would try to get one close to the same age if possible, and I would try to find the same breed, so you will have pure, in case you want to continue with a pure flock.

Have you ever seen ugly chicks, other than NN and Silkies?

You would probably be doing a nice roo a big favor. People get rid of their roos for various reasons. FInd one like your girls and give him a home. He will take care of your girls and really they like having babies.

What breed are your hens? Roos of some breeds tend to be more aggressive than others. Unless you're really a big fan of the breed, or plan to show/sell your "purebred" chicks, it doesn't matter if your roo is of the same breed. I'd make it a higher priority to find one that is mannerly & inexpensive.

I think mixed-breed chickens are as fine as purebreds except you can't show them, and they are often sturdier with their hybrid vigor and come in a greater variety of colors & patterns.

But unless your hens are the broody types, or you use an electric incubator, you might not get chicks from this marriage, whether or not you want to add more birds to your flock.

Post a "wanted" notice at your local feed store and you should get a good response. Often there are other chicken keepers with extra roos they're just too tender-hearted to have for dinner. And even though we do eat our extra roos, there are usually a few that are exceptionally handsome or mild-mannered that I'd prefer to see go husband some flock of hens instead.

Have we convinced you yet? Let us know what you decide!

I have 3 white leghorns and 3 other brown birds..can't remember what they are now! lol I am not into showing or pure breeds..my chickens are for our own family entertainment. I am most certain going to get a roo....it sounds like it would make my coop complete.

The girls are just getting ready to lay...I watched on of my white girls "make" a nest this morning in the nest box. Soo..any day now!

I've put an add on craig's list and will post something at my local feed store this week. I will try to get a roo the same age as the girls..about 22 weeks old. Keeping my fingers crossed for a nice friendly one!

Thanks for all your advise!
