Good point, junebuggena, also depends on your climate, as to how large you want an enclosed area for the girls. We only have 6 right now, but enclosed, partly covered area is 8 x 15 feet, also used for roosting, feed, water, protection, in really foul weather. This area, because it is partly enclosed, can be heated on cold nights. Although we have very few, its nice to know the hens are comfortable on those nights. Coop/nesting area is 8 x 8 feet. this also includes a couple of roosting bars, (which are rarely ever used), is actully under our house which is raised 5 feet off the ground, again fully enclosed. As with everthing in life, do your research before hand, it will make your life easier and give you more time to enjoy your flock. Keep us posted on how things work out, would love to see how you progress. There is no right or wrong answer, as long as your hens have enough room and are happy and healthy.
