*****Should I help this chick hatch?/Malpositioned :/ First time hatcher******

I read in the learning center over and over about how to assist a chick, but in the malpositioned section I don't know if I should be zipping from the pipped hole and hoping she pushes through that way. The only pictures really talked about zipping the air sack end. I'm just confused I guess. Thank you for any help. Working to keep the membrane moist with water and qtip.

Well she should be good for a little while as long as she has air. Have you read other post?
I helped 3 of mine and 1 naturally came out.
I had a dead one too that suffocated and never got through the shell :( broke my heart.

I'm so sorry you lost one, I am so stupidly attached to this one now, always love the underdog. I've google searched "helping malpostioned chicks hatch" and "helping breech chicks hatch" and haven't found anything that tell me steps on what to do. I searched Malpositioned up in the search bar too and read some posts, kind of seems like people just figure out and do what they can. There wasn't really anything that went step by step. So I have zipped around the shell, leaving the membrane in tack. There was a small amount of blood, the the membrane looks pretty solid still, not thin/transparent like I thought it should. So I've put her back and have the humidity up high, she is the last one left. Everyone else is in the temp brooder till they move to the big one. I will take a picture and up load it. Even if this doesn't turn out well at least I've kind of documented what I've done and can help someone else. But hopefully it ends up good :)

Update: So at 0100 Saturday I carefully used a tweezers to chip off the top part of the shell above the membrane. I would place one half of the tweezers (I cleaned them with alcohol pad for 30 seconds) under the shell between the shell and the membrane and squeeze down to crack that little part of the shell off. I did that till all the shell was off the top and membrane was still intact. The membrane looked white but there were no large blood vessels.

I removed or more like peeled down the membrane. There was some blood/fluid mixed. It made me a little nervous I didn't want to pull it out to soon and not have all the yolk absorbed. So once the cap was off I put the chick back in the incubator and hoped that it would free itself the rest of the way and went to bed.

At 0900 the chick was still in the 1/2 shell, but chirping :) It feet were still tucked up by it's tummy. I carefully helped the chick out of the shell. It had a bigger navel and little string of umbilical cord attached. I used a disinfected sharp scissors to cut the little bit of cord because the chick was kicking around and I didn't want it to pull on the cord. There was a tiny bit of blood so I dabbed a little corn starch on with a Qtip.

It's 1205 right now and chick is chirping and moving around. Legs and feet look good. So fingers crossed it has the energy to keep going :)

Oh good!!! I'm so glad it worked out! Looks like you made the right decision. I would be at a lost too if mine came out like that.
Good job!!

Thank you :-) and thank you for responding, it was nice to have the support! That was so stressful, I think just being our first hatch and not wanting to lose one from something I did.

The chick is doing good, out with it's hatch mates in the brooder, was drinking water and pecking at the chick feed.
