Should I help this chick hatch??

All done! There was a small amount of bleeding but not much. I peeled off about half of the shell then did the membrane. At the bottom the membrane was very dry and there were a few spots I had to unstick from the chick. It was a very small egg so I'm wondering that had anything to do with it.

Congrats! Glad you didn't run into any big problems. It's always a hard decision to make. I always wait as long as possible before removing a chick. Usually, if a chick starts zipping and then stops, it usually means it is stuck if several hours have passed. Pipped, but no zip, is more difficult to determine what is going on. Looks like yours was stuck.

Congrats! Glad you got the little one out alright.

Unfortunately I don't think this ones going to make it. She hasn't really perked up at all since she hatched. She's very small compared to the others and in the past when we've had chicks that are a lot smaller, they never make it. Her egg was very small....maybe small eggs don't do so well?

I'm sorry to hear that.

If you have some Poly-Vi-Sol (without iron) you can rub a drip along the edge of her beak until she licks some up. Try to get her to lick up a couple drops. Sometimes it can really help to give them the strength they need to fight through. Other times it just isn't meant to be. I hope she surprises you and comes out of it.

Forgot to add, that many people won't incubate excessively small OR large eggs, because there are often difficulties with them. This would mean any egg that is overly small or overly large compared to that particular hen's normal egg size. There can also sometimes be difficulties with hatching early pullet eggs, though some people hatch them regularly with great success.

Thanks for the advice! This particular egg I got from my neighbor and I think the hen is pretty young and hasn't been laying long.

I have my new chick with the rough hatch on the sav a chick vitamins and boiled egg yolk...seems to be helping & she's got a ton of energy. Not sure if that will work for you but I hope yours turns around.

Glad to hear she is doing well. The sav-a-chick vitamins are great too. (I just always think of poly-vi-sol first because it is what I can keep on hand easiest. My pharmacist is happy to order it for me.) Egg yolk is like a super-food. It is so chock full of protein and vitamins. I like to give some as treats to all my chicks, but it can be especially helpful with weak ones if you can get them to eat.

Good news! She's doing great! By the next day she had perked up and was running around with the others! She has pasty butt which I'm keeping clean but apart from that she's doing awesome! Thanks so much for all your advice!
