I helped two of my cuckoo marans. Both are fine. One was for sure not going to make it out of the egg. It was one of the last to pip and it had begun zipping but everything exposed was completely dried out. The membrane had become leathery and the chick was stuck to it pretty securely. I wasnt going to just let it dry up and die. I gentlly took the shell away around it and allowed it to push itself out of the egg as if it had finished zipping on its own. I did have to give the little bugger a bath to get all the dried membrane and shell off it, but am happy to say it is doing wonderful.
Both chicks i helped out of the shell, i finished the zipping for them. I allowed both to push out of the shells on their own. I dont know if it made any difference, but both are healthy and full of life. Neither would have been without intervention. Natural or not, i am pleased.
