due to predators and illnesses I am down to 1 rooster and 1 hen. I do not intend to get any more at this time. Can these 2 live happily without other hens or should I rehome them? Thank you

Hi, welcome to BYC! :frow

Sorry for your loss. :(

I think they MAY be able to live together... How old are they? You can let them try and live happily and if the hen is over mated then follow through. Although they may like larger groups for social activities, having each other SHOULD be plenty, barring over mating issues.

If you aren't enjoying having them right now, due to circumstance.. you might consider rehoming anyways. Although I would hesitate to send any illness into someone else's flock without FULL disclosure as to what you have dealt with regarding illness.

:fl

Thank you. There is no illness now. These 2 are inseparable and best buddies. I'll keep an eye on things.

Depending on what type of illness and how long it has been, they COULD still be carriers. Some things are considered life time.

Their age will impact their behavior. Older birds are more mellow while younger birds are more... amorous if you will.

Hang onto them and try to enjoy hanging out. You can always reconsider if it seems to be too much. :)

Have you corrected you predator problem already?
