Should i let the girls name the chicks???

I selected to name a handful of my girls, however, I do not have children that are affected by this - just me

It is funny b/c the BR's are all Bard, the SLW's are Silver, the GLW's are Goldy; the BO's are Buffy and Goldy but I don't know which is which.

Maybe select a few chicks that are special and that's it no more. But as someone else said once you've named them children think of them differently than we do.

Ours have names but the kids know if they are roosters they aren't staying. We keep the layers and plan to get a batch of meat birds. I doubt that the meat birds will get names but they can name them if they want to spend the time doing so.

That is too cute.

The day before our meaties came my kids spent an hour coming up with names for all of them and writing them down. Then my 7yo said, "Wait, how are we going to tell them apart?" I told them they wouldn't be able to because meat chicks all look alike. Aha!

On a side note, my kids adjusted fine to the idea that we would be eating our chickens. When we lost one the first night, my son asked, "You're not going to make a little tiny chicken sandwich out of it, are you?" Then he laughed!

We did go ahead and name our little mystery chick, now I just to go get a friend for him from the feed store.

Hmm, not sure what I'm going to do about the little one but I guess either way I'll hold off on letting him name them until we know for sure it's not a roo.

When we owned a farm we raised pigs for slaughter. My the three year old was very excited that we were going to"kill" a hog. Later I found him pouting outside the barn. I asked him why he was upset. His reply... " I wanted you to kill it but I didn't want it dead though". Young children just don't get the concept of death even when we think we've explained things. I guess I would just let them name the ones I intended to keep.

Most of our chickens have names, and my daughter has named several of them. She named "her" Buff Orpington pullet Christmas, our OEGB hen Pinky Pie, and she named the Silkies: Belle, Cinderella, Arielle, and Prince Charming. LOL.

We do... all ours are named by the kiddies of course.... they're good at telling them apart, we do have quite a few now. However since we have been incubating and hatching chicks we've all completly gone off eating chicken.... so ours wont make it to our table... they are safe with their names!! :)))
