Should I order Golden 300 hybrids from Metzer's?

I love my WH. And had considered getting the 300's, I am glad that I didn't as we don't eat enough eggs for all the eggs we are getting. That being said I bought 30 ducklings last fall, 5 are female WH, 5 female Peking, 2 female mallards and 3 female Rouen- They give me on average 7 eggs a day and I can't keep up. I also have on average 14 chicken eggs a day.

But you are wanting encouragement- I LOVE my ducks. Even with the problems that come up with them, I really like them! Go for it- they are worth it!!!

Just make sure you like the breed! And don't get 30 at one time- but I think 10 would be do able!!! 30 ended up being overwhelming last year (I thought it would be like raising 30 chicks when I ordered them.... concluded that no ducklings are NOT like chicks- they are a bunch more work)

I have them for egg production and agree with what others are saying about breeds. I love my 300's, however I am getting too many eggs even with selling them. Where are you located, I have 2 adults 2nd generation 300's for sell.

I don't have any myself, but haven't heard anything bad about them. The only downside is that they are hybrids so won't breed true. That isn't an issue if you do not intend to hatch ducklings.

The really good egg layers that should breed true are Campbells, Runners, and Welsh Harlequins.

Silver Appleyards are good layers, too, but they are quite large and if all you want is eggs and not roast duck, it isn't economical to feed that large a bird.

We ordered 10 mixed ducklings from Metzer last Fall, (we reacivied 11) , we ended up with 4 Campbells, 2 WH, 4 mallards, and 1 300 layer.

The layer was the sweetest, most people duck, when she was a duckling, Marky loved to be held on her tummy and rocked to sleep.

She is no longer with us, due to an unfortunate owl accident, which wiped out 4 ducks..... Including Marky
