Should I provoke my roo?

That.

I don't pick fights with him, but if he's waltzing up to me like he owns the place, then I usually crowd up in his space until he backs away. If he doesn't move away then I'll yank his tailfeathers and make him run and hide behind the coop. Top roos randomly peck their lowers, so I think it's perfectly acceptable to reinforce your status every once in a while.
He never attacks me, and he guards his hens well, so I keep him, but strangers beware !!

I concerned about my young roo - - - about 5 months old - - - becoming nasty.
So, recently I have started going in a holding him for a few minutes every day.
I think this gently establishes my spot in the heirachy.

He is not thrilled with the process and that is part of why I do it!

I had a Rhode Island Roo and I read on this site all kinds of ways to set your ranking. Every time he ran at me I spent 10 minutes chasing him around. AFter 10 months I got rid of him. Gave him to a friend. He was attacking me every time I went out to feed them. I couldn't have a attack roo with a toddler. So then after two months I got a Barred Rock roo from a breeder. I was hesitant. Told him my story and he said it was the breed. I am pleased with this BR roo. He protects his girls but never has attacked me. I've has him three weeks. We (my daughter, hudband, and I) are outside daily and they free range. So far, I'm happy with him and he is a older roo. about two I would say looking at his spurs.
