Today i came home from work and noticed one of golden comets laying in the corner of my coop. I thought she might have been trying to lay an egg but then noticed one of the hens pecking her and she didnt move. Well i pick her up and put her on her feet and she just layed back down. I proceded to get her out of the coop and put her to her self. I noticed after moving her she started flaling around and before i could do anything she died. I keep plenty of food and water for all my chickens and i check for forms in their poop but nothing. She was only a year old. Should i be worried that all my chickens could start dropping? I have 2 more comets that i got from the same co-op and they seem fine but she did too yesterday. i would love to hear any ideas.

Thanks

Jamie

Sort of similar to what is going on with my BO right now. Difference is mine acts drunk when she walks around. This happened to my Lt Brahama last week and it died. I am hoping this sort of thing doesn't wipe out my entire flock.

Sorry to hear about your loss

Thats what i am worried about. She didnt really act drunk though. I assumed she had her shots since she came from a Hatchery. I hope this dont start a trend.

eggbound?
My hen was eggbound and then died... she was a red star too btw. She layed in the corner, just as yours did and didn't move much.

Typically they only vaccinate if you ask for it to be done. I know the ones from TSC are not vaccinated. I haven't had chickens for very long, but after reading on BYC quite a bit for the last 4 months it seems that people lose chickens suddenly or for unknown reasons quite frequently. The thing with birds is that they usually don't show any signs of being sick until they are REALLY sick.

The drunk one would have me worried about Marek's disease as it can affect their balance and it is contagious. If you lose her, and I hope you don't, I would look into having a necropsy done. There are usually state labs that will do them at little or no cost for backyard flocks.

I lost on last Feb to what they thought was Marek's and know another one this morning. I really thought the lab was wrong, but now I am rethinking.

I hope your girls get well. It is horrible to have them sick and not know why.
