Should I trust the vet for crop issue?

Hello, I have a 20 week old austrailorp who's crop is not emptying overnight and is the size of a tennis ball. She is alert, eating, drinking, pooping and still laying normally. We took her to the vet the next day. They took x-rays and said her crop was full of sand. We had a coarse sand floor in the run and was informed by the vet to change to a different substrate and sent us on our way telling us to massage her crop and it should work itself out. The vet also said we did not have to isolate and that she could eat, drink and socialize normally.

We immediately removed all the sand and replaced it with pine shavings and gave granite grit free choice in a dish. 2 days later I picked her up to massage her crop and she regurgitated brown fluid which smelled sour. Unfortunately it was sunday and the vet was closed, so i monitored throughout the day. She is still alert, eating, drinking, pooping, laying normally. Poop is solid, green/brown with typical white but filled with sand grit. The next day I took her in. Vet did a crop flush and sample. When the vet cam back into the room they said they revisited the x-rays and noticed something in the hen's crop (see attached). After seeing the x-ray I am questioning the vet's credibility. Why did they not see this in the first visit? They prescribed antibiotics (clavacillin) and anti-inflammatory (carprofen). Told us to give apple cider vinegar mixed at 2 Tbl to 1 gal. Orally give water and massage crop 3 times a day and if the object does not clear out in a week then they would have to remove it. A day later, after getting some rest and time to think about it, why antibiotics and anti-inflammatory if she has impacted and/or sour crop? I was not informed if the sample was bacterial or fungal and I was too tired to think to ask. Its now been a week since we noticed the crop issue. It is still not emptying overnight and is the same size. It has also gone from feeling like a sand filled balloon to feeling like a gas filled balloon. I did notice yesterday that her breath no longer smells sour. Should I continue with the vet's instructions or should I try to find someone else? Do I have to worry about pendulous crop since it has been extended for so long? Again our hen is acting completely normal.

It looks like she ate something metal based on how it appears in the x-ray. If it was missed in the first x-ray then either she ate it between the first and second x-ray, or it was covered up by the matter in her crop. If you look at the very bottom of her crop in this x-ray, the matter is increasingly white which would camouflage the object if it was behind all that matter. Then the shape of that object might not look so distinct but rather organic. Do you have the first x-ray? I personally would not be questioning the vet's credibility given that we don't know when she ate that object. X-rays are very carefully looked at.

What do you mean by not emptying overnight? You say that the crop is not emptying but then also say that the crop feels like a gas filled balloon which would indicate that it is only filled with gas instead of with food and other matter. These are contradictory.

Did the vet prescribe antibiotics after the first or second visit? In some cases antibiotics is an acceptable treatment but I personally would not jump to that immediately. With sour crop caused by an impacted crop, antifungals are needed at times so if this was prescribed then I would not bat an eye. Anti-inflammatory is not something I would think is needed but the vet may have seen a reason to give it since there is a foreign body that likely is not digestible.

Does that look like the pull tab off a soda can?

I think it looks more like a piece of a broken zipper. I've got the pull tab of a soda can right next to be and it looks to big to be one as well as the wrong shape. Unless it is from a can whose pull tab is funky. Even then I think it is too big/would be uncomfortable for a chicken to eat.

Do you have the first x-ray
This is from the first set of x-rays. I was not charged or told that they took a second set of x-rays on the second visit. The vet specifically said revisited.

It is the same size as when she goes to bed the night before. Feels firm in the mornings with no defined grit or food. As the day progresses you can begin to feel grit/food in the bottom of the crop. So, not reducing in size more than not emptying. She is eating and passing food through her system.

I stand corrected. This should not have been missed. It is very obvious and the exact shading/contrast a metal object looks like on an x-ray. Unless they assumed it was part of their set up (shouldn't be), then there is no reason for this to be missed. I would understand if they object had different shading or was very obscured but this is blatantly obvious.

That is good that she is passing food through her system. I think the others would be better at addressing this part of the issue better than I will. My thinking is that is this why the vet gave anti-inflammatories in the chance that her crop is irritated and inflamed with the metal object in there. If you think it might be trapped gas, can you try and massage it so the gas can escape?

I guess my real question is, if it was your hen, would you wait and see if the object passes on its own within a week, or have it removed?
