Not really negative. If you never did a physical sport in your life then ask to do something physically demanding that takes skill and time to get decent at why would you say go for it?

Some things they DON'T tell you about soccer:

1. You get kicked, ALOT.
2. You will have ridiculous amounts of bruises.
3. You will always have divots in your shins from where you have been kicked by jerks who feel it necessary to kick your shins...REALLY hard. Even with shin guards on.

4. You better like to run. ALOT.
5. Seriously, run ALOT.
6. If you have bad knees, just don't.
7. Forget water...get an IV drip.
8. Ridiculously competitive. I didn't stay in contact with ANY of the soccer people I played with.

Those are a few of the reasons I say "heck no". I regret every minute wasted on soccer. I'm sure to many millions of people it is very enjoyable, but for those of us who are built for softball instead of soccer...just my opinion.

How do you know if someone's done a "physical" sport in their life?

My oldest son was a very good soccer player and played 12 years in a row and loved it. He was a lefty and could kick the ball in to the goal from the corner.

This is your last year in school I would go for it.

I am an old lady. Here is my advice (and I really, REALLY wish I had learned this when I was in high school)- Don't ask what others think. It doesn't matter. Do you want to try playing soccer? Then go for it! Do you have other things you want to do and you would only be playing soccer because your friends want you to? Then don't do it.

Life is too short, my friend. Life is entirely too short to be doing things because other people think you should. If you are 17-18 years old you are absolutely old enough to know your own mind. What do YOU want to do? Figure it out and then go do it. You may stink at it. You may start it and decide that it isn't for you. You might turn out to have a new skill. You just never know. But if you only do the things that other people want then you never really get to explore being who you want to be. Be you. Forget the rest of them. In ten years you will have lost contact with 99% of them anyway.

(For what it is worth, some of the things I tried that I was rotten at were the most fun and I am very glad I gave them a go. Will I ever be a great soccer player/ pottery maker/ gymnast/ actor/ cook/ artist/ etc? Nope. Did I learn useful things and have a blast trying them? Yup. I'm glad I tried even though I wasn't perfect at them.)

I went to my ten year high school reunion (eons ago!). It was fascinating. The kids who had been the most popular and the "In" crowd were actually pretty boring adults. Most had already peaked and they were just like they had been in high school. The most fascinating people at the reunion were those that had been considered a little weird in high school. They had marched to the beat of their own drummer and done what interested them. They were the coolest adults because they were interesting and were passionate about something that they loved. They all had great jobs in unique fields and were doing well. The football team captian and class president and the cheerleaders and all that lot were really boring by comparison.

All of that to say, ignore what we all say and do what you want to do. Be yourself and enjoy it!

I've played soccer for years, its not just a matter of kicking the ball in a certain direction and running. At a grade 12 level the players are going to have some skill and if you've never played before... you might find yourself falling behind. With that said, I don't know the skill level of your school. At my school only the best make the team, soccer is very popular here.

*facepalm* You know what, I'm out of this. This discussion is ridiculous.

Oh, and I should mention that although they say soccer is a non-contact sport, be prepared for contact. Right now I'm playing indoor soccer because you can't play outside in the snow. A few games ago I accidently knocked another player's front teeth out because we both jumped to head the ball at the same time. It was an accident, but it happens. Last winter a girl broke her ankle and had to be taken out on a stretcher.

Of course, these are all extreame situations but they can and will happen.

Only because you are making it ridiculous, if you're so upset, don't post. This thread'll be locked quicker then you can say "Opps"
