i am getting chickens for my backyard but i am woried about cats should i protecd them or should i just leave it

Depends upon the cat, really. My two outside cats, Biscuit and Goldie, prefer blue-jays and mockingbirds to chickens. It also depends on how many chickens you have. Cats are good hunters, but they won't get into a situation where they're just going to get gang-banged, if you get my drift. One cat per two or three birds should keep things peaceful, I think.

I have 5 adult cats, 4 kittens, 13 hens, 2 guineas, a turkey and a duck.. everyone free ranges and no one bothers anyone else until feeding time.. I have to wait til the chickens goto bed before I feed the cats otherwise the chickens run the cats off and eat the feed... :

My cats are great hunters too.. always catching rats and rabbits..

Yeah my 4 cats and 2 dogs live peacefully with my free-ranging chickens also. Just keep an eye on the cats and watch how they interact till you can trust them enough to leave them alone together.

My cat Morris has taken to sleeping with the chickens. It's either a long-term plan to befriend them and then one day when they least expect it - eat them - or - he really likes hanging out with them
