Hi! I just got four new chicks and I want to put some sand In there brooder for them to dust bathe! I don’t want to go to the store right know because we are in a shelter in place so I’m trying to stay home has much has possible! I have sand in my back yard but I’m worried that there might be sand mites or worm eggs in it! My chickens have had worms before and mites has well! Am I just being paranoid 😬 does natural sand have mites in it or worm eggs? Can I use it!?

You can use natural sand. I don't really think dust bathing is a necessity at chick stage. (in brooder) I have offered sand for my chickens as dust bath medium, and they did not use it. They choose dry soil, and potting soil in my unused flower pots as a preference. When your chicks do get bigger, and you decide to provide a dust bath, do not used fertilizer enhanced potting soil. Basically go with the cheaper stuff .

There have been a few stories about small chicks swallowing sand and dying from an infected crop. All-purpose sand is considered' healthy.' The building, bank drop, or river sand is the easiest sand to use.

I don’t think I would put sand in with chicks. Mine don’t dust bathe until they’re a little older. They do quite well with learning to dust bathe in their pine shavings bedding.
