OK so stupid question but do I need to wash my eggs? We have not been because they are not dirty. But the other day I sold some to a friend and they ask if we washed em. They were concerned about bacteria issues. What's the gen opinion on this to wash or not to wash. We figure if they aren't dirty why waste the time. Are we wrong?

I am just starting to get my own eggs. Only one chicken laying so far. The eggs are clean when I gather them. The nest boxes have clean straw and DE. I wasn't going to wash the eggs until I get ready to eat them unless they were dirty.

I don't wash my eggs unless they are really dirty. You'd wash the bloom off of them that protects from bacteria entering the egg.

If you need to wash, do so just before cooking and with warm water, warmer than the egg.

Hope this helps.

As others have said, you shouldn't wash them before using if you can help it as it removes the natural protection against bacteria. However, if you have a really dirty egg, you can wash it lightly and gently scrub off the muck with a mushroom or nail brush. Then, rub some olive oil into the pores of the egg to protect it from bacteria entering the egg.

Is not washing them necessary even if the eggs are stored in the fridge? Or do you also recommend not putting them in the fridge?
