Should pellets cost more than crumbles?*UPDATE #2*

I went there today, and the guy asked me if I wanted pellets. He said they got some in because someone had requested them.

Pellets here are more than crumbles but from expeirence they do last longer and so are cheaper because they don't waste as much at least for me that is true. Crumbles are $8-$9 and pellets are $11-$13. The local elevator doesn't even carry them so I have to go to the feed store and now that I downloaded the tractor supply coupon I am hoping they carry pellets and I can save the five dollars on two or three bags.

My local feed store charges more for pellets as well. $14 for #50 vs. $12 for the crumbles. I was wasting so much with the crumbles because my chickens seem to prefer to empty the whole feeder on the ground. I cut my feed bill atleast in half by switching to the pellets. I can clearly see those if they end up on the ground and I don't fill the feeder until they clean up a bit:)

I pay more for pellets vs. crumbles too... I dont know why it is that way since its the same thing just smashed down to a smaller particle, but... it is. Medicated feed also costs more than non-medicated here.

It also varies in price from one Co-Op to the other even though both are Southern States - makes NO sense to me whatsoever! I go to one Co-Op and pay .10 a lb for both oyster shell and fine ground grit; yet my other Co-Op (again, both SStates) charges $1.00 per lb!!

I ask them WHY that is and they just shrug their shoulders and say "Go to the other Co-Op then". Its the same with feed as well - a 50 lb bag of pellets is less than $14.00 at the one I visit - yet at the other, its around $20.00!

No sense to me at all...

I called and emailed Manna Pro and was told by their corporate office that there shouldn't be such a difference in the price. They wouldn't go into specifics, I guess they sell at different prices in different parts of the country. But they said their pellets shouldn't cost more than their crumbles.

So today I was in the neighborhood of that feed store, and went in with a dozen of my hens' most beautiful eggs. I just wanted to give them to the store owner in appreciation of the "favor" he claimed to have extended, by selling the pellets at a price that he said was below his cost. I wanted to let him know that I could no longer do business there, to drive further and pay more for my chicken feed. And to let him know that perhaps his sales rep was overcharging him for the pellets. And to contact me if they could ever reconcile those prices.

Instead I talked with another manager in the store, I think he's the sales manager. He was happy to receive the eggs, and acted sorry to be losing my business. He asked "What would it take to keep you as a customer?" and I said "To get the pellets for the same price as the crumbles". He looked up some things on his computer, and said "All right, we'll do that." And he promised they'd deliver it to me for free.

I still don't know if the sales rep is overcharging this dealer, or if this dealer was trying to overcharge me. But I'm happy with this arrangement now, and think it must have been the chickens themselves, with their lovely eggs, who made the difference.

I had made the new agreement with the store manager on Fri. I couldn't buy any feed at that time because I'd forgotten to bring my wallet on that trip. So I asked if they could deliver early this week. They were having a big grand opening party over the weekend, so I said I'd call on Mon to see when they could deliver to my neighborhood. They were hoping to get a lot of new customers & orders during their party, and hoping to have other deliveries to do in my area.

I phoned on Mon & spoke with a sales girl. I told her to ask the manager if he was able to deliver my feed this day. She called back & left a pleasant voice mail message saying yes, they were planning my delivery, and asked me to call back to verify.

But when I called back, I got the owner on the phone. Who grumbled that he couldn't justify the cost to deliver just a few bags of feed to me, that he was losing money selling them to me at that cost, and what about this email he received from Manna Pro saying I had complained about being overcharged for feed there, etc etc. I really didn't want to get into it with him, and just said I was returning a call from his nice sales girl, who wanted me to verify the order I was supposed to be getting. He grumbled that he'd have his manager call me back.

But he never did, and neither did I get my order delivered. At this point I am just going to wish them well with their business, but not give them any more of mine.

The crumbles we use are simply CRUSHED pellets! All the same ingredients!
Since feed is sold by the Lb... it should cost the same-- OR- since the crumbles go thru a 2nd process, they should be higher priced???

At the TSC where I get my chickens' food it used to be $12.99 for layer pellets and $13.49 for layer crumbles. Imagine my surprise when I went to get food a couple of weeks ago and both the crumbles and pellets were the same price... and both had come down to $10 + change!
