:cafWe plan on getting our chickens later this summer. The kids would love to show them in 4-H. What exactly are judges looking for? I am contacting the head of the 4-H in our area to get more specifics for this region but in general what are the qualities of a great chicken? Let me rephrase that since all chickens are great!

What qualities makes a chicken a Blue Ribbon winner?

I know the basics on caring for a BYC but was wondering if its different for a show bird?

What do people do to keep their chickens in top show condition?

Is it only "purebreds" or can you show any "old" chicken?
So many questions!

My SIL mentioned that you have your best three in a cage together and then the judges pick the best of those three. She's in Texas I'm in Washington. Is there a standard set of rules/guidelines? I'm sure the 4-H lady will be able to give me all the details, thought I would pick your BYC brains since there are so many from all over.

So far my kids are interested in Wyandottes, Light Brahma, Cochins, Silkies, and Turkins, yep, thats right, my teen loves the Naked Necks. I'm partial to the Polish and their crazy mullets.

Is there some where to look up chickens like there is for AKC standards in dogs. Someone needs to start ACC (American Coop Club) That'd be way cool!

I think I am living vicariously through my kids. I would have loved to do this when I was a kid. Since I was a Military Brat there was no chance of that happening. Can't imagine moving every three years with a chicken!

So, any information will be greatly appreciated and I look forward to hearing from you all!

Check out the website for American Poultry Association for starters, they have a lot of breed standard info...we are going to order their book, "American Standard of Perfection" I believe is the title...it's got all the need-to-know info, I hear.

Good luck!
