Show Ducks

Forget the wild breeds, find a breeder close to you that you could purchase a pair of Call/BEI ducks from. Don't spend alot on your first pair, just make sure they are not mutts. Get some books, enter some local shows to learn from others, most important have fun..............once you have enjoyed the hobby for a while, then look into spending more on good breeders. By then you will know what to look for.

Yep, if you want show style birds go with the calls.
As for the wild birds, I had over 100 species of them for 20 some od years. You'll never get tame wood ducks, you get them calm, but nothing like calls.
The permits for migratory waterfowl are given to you by the breeder who has to be liscensed to sell them by the U.S.D.I. Division of Migratory Waterfowl Permits Section, the state DNR has nothing to do with it, it's Federally regulated.
To own them, this receipt the breeder gives you is all that you need and is free. If you wish to sell them later own, then you have to buy the permit, which was only $25 back in my days with them. I wish more people would keep them as they put the domestic birds to shame when it comes to color, the woodies are just a drop in the bucket. Now that I am back on my family farm finally, I fully intend to get them all back,
But, no, they arent intended for shows, never heard of a show classed for them either.

Good luck, you'll love any you do decide to go with, I'd recommend the snowys, or butterscotch call, I always loved their colors..

yes the Butterscoth and snowy are very pertty calls aren't they , along with the silver appleyard call is nice too.

Here in canada every one that has Wood ducks or canada geese or wild malirds has to have a permit for them. i was going to get some Wood ducks this year but never did

Yep,
The silvers are nice too, some of the others get a little too mixed up looking to me beyond them. But of the domestics, I always loved the calls. And yep, I have no idea what the wild bird laws are in Canada, we have to all have permits too, but the purchaser gets a freebie from the seller just to posses them..
