If you look at my BYC page you can see pics of mine. I can't help that much with building materials because this was given to me by someone from Freecycle, although you can mostly see what it is comprised of. The lady who gave it to me built it herself and I can tell you that under the shingles is a layer of hardware cloth. I've been using it now for about two years. When she gave it to me it had a 1/4" plywood floor that was rotted out. I removed it with plans to replace it but in the end I cut a piece of vinyl flooring just a little bigger, laid it on the ground, set the coop on top and it works great. I also added a roost in the coop. I bought a 2x4 stud, cut a length off that was the same length as the coop (parallel to the peaked roof), cut the remaining piece in two to create legs, attached them, and then used a scrap piece of wood to create a "foot" for each leg for stability. Works great! Right now I have 9 chickens in it. Yeah, yeah, I know that is WAY to many for the 4x4 footprint. But - they don't have a run - they free-range all day long. I don't keep food, water or nest box in the coop. ALL that is in it is a roost so it is only used for sleeping and it seems to be working out fine.

Starting my a-frame this week when I get a minute. Got all my ply and battens cut to size. I just have to screw it all together. Gonna put 3 hens and a roo inside end of march.

An A frame is easy to build, but in my opinion kinda hard to adapt well for use as a chicken coop. The "head room" is seriously restricted unless you make a very tall one, or you have to put the roosts in low, where can you put the vents, etc. It's a real challenge of interior design, I think, to get it to work properly.

Good luck, though. Let us all see what you figure out!

It isn't finished yet but this is the A-"frame" I plan to build on and house 15 or so birds. The run will extend out from the sides and double the footprint of 72' at the base of the frame. Soooooo many possibilities here!!!
