Is there just a lot of variation in feather development, or are some of these birds in our situation, which is that we don't really know how old they are to start with?

P.S. I do really appreciate people sharing the pictures.

Okay, here is two chicks the day we got them, a welsummer with the brown and light stripes next to a black star. That wellie has some serious wing action going, like I'd guess she is already a week old. Last night I noticed she also has the first sign of a tailfeather.
I think the star must be younger, and they have really fattened up in 3 days.
p.s. Australorpe is napping in the upper left there. There's also someone in the shadow, they're okay now. We raised the lamp.

What a great thread! Great, great pictures!

But wow, if that is what they look like at 3 and 4 weeks old, what do they look like at 6 weeks? Isn't that about the age they would leave the brooder? And if so, I can't imagine those rubber-maid containers being big enough.

It's very possible that I am totally in left field because I don't even own a chicken --still in research mode.
