Made a litte pallet A-frame for the chicks this week. They really like climbing it and sleeping under it

I cut about 15" off the end of the pallets leaving 1 bottom stringer and 2 top stringers that will be made into shelves for spray paint cans. Eventually

Love those chicken projects that the chickens actually use. Thanks for sharing.

A quick stop in...
We added 4.5in lagscrews into the corner 4x4 posts for extra security...

I really like those lagscrews. I found a couple of long pallets with heavy wood on them and they used those long lagscrews to put the pallet together. I was able to back out and save almost all those lagscrews from those pallets. I don't know how much you paid for your lagscrews, but the ones I managed to salvage from the pallets cost about 80 cents each here in town. I think I was able to salvage ~40 of those long lagscrews so I felt like I hit paydirt on that pallet pickup.

Heck, I'm not too proud to save and reuse the hardware from the pallet breakdowns as well as the wood. If I can reuse it, it gets saved.

I did something similar!

I remember that pallet wood A-Frame chicken shelter thing. Another great idea that the chickens will actually use. I built a pallet wood compost bin in my chicken run a number of years ago and it's mainly used as chicken furniture these days, but it gets used all the time. All those simple pallet wood "furniture/shelter" projects for the chickens seem to work.

Heck, I'm not too proud to save and reuse the hardware from the pallet breakdowns as well as the wood. If I can reuse it, it gets saved.

We added onto our coop today. I had to take out/disassemble some things that were in the way. Almost every one of the screws I took out was reused in the build. And some of the screws in the build were reclaimed when DH brought home some shelving from work.

I love screws... more expensive, but reusable and if you put it in the wrong place, take it out and put it where it's supposed to be.

Put in screws 4-5 times...

I know nails can also be reused, but taking out a screw is so easy with a power drill or impact wrench and usually it comes out straight. Nails are often bent, or sometimes the heads pop off. I prefer to use screws whenever I have a choice.

Unless you strip it...oops.

The Torx head screws have far fewer strip outs. But they cost more. Sometimes it's worth the extra money depending on the build.

Most of my pallet projects are put together with cheap drywall screws which I buy by the pound at our local Fleet store. Good enough for most projects. Special projects might require the more expensive Torx head screws. But I cannot remember the last project that I pounded nails. It's been that long.

Speaking of nails....
We went to take that roof off and it was nailed in...not screwed...we walked away. It's a big building (old chicken house) and we just didn't see the point in tugging and yanking for hours and hours....

We found a local man who sells used corrugated metal. And put our names down for 20 12ft pieces. Price is $12/ sheet. Still a great deal, still saving money, just not doing the work.... didn't seem worth it with time invested

We will be picking our metal up Friday. Hopefully the 2x4s this wkend...and we shall be able to roof...


With the price of the metal and the board for the door frame the cost of the shed so far is $411

I think I stripped about 4 screws on the entire hoop coop project. My dh took out a couple of them for me, using vice grips.

I use a lot of drywall screws too, mostly inside. What I use the most though are the hex headed screws. First box I bought were sold as structural screws. I just love them. I've never had them strip, they almost never snap and they never rust. I can remove them ten years later and reuse them again and again. I've never used torx screws though so

Yep, your time is worth money, too. Too bad that did not work out for you, but sounds like you already have a backup plan.
