I wish I knew. My white goose pictured in the nest has a beautiful saddleback hidden under her white wings. She mated with our lavender Sebastopol and one of the eggs hatched. The little one has no trace of a saddle. So, I will just have to wait until my 5 week old gosling grows up to see what the little one will look like. You might be right that the gander has to have the saddleback.

Your saddleback looks a lot like mine. What a great gaggle you have!!!!

I had a good hatching season this year and ended up with 6 saddle backs . The parents where both pied . They were mostly white with grey flecks all over and there babies came out saddleback, grey, white , lavender and only 1 gosling that is white with grey flecks. I have 3 lavenders from this batch and read they are always male .I have read with cross breeds the saddle backs will all be female but I’m not sure that is true if they are 3rd generation of crosses ? I will find out when they mature I guess. I hope they are both sexes though. Saddle backs are my favorite. I cross them because there is not a lot of genetic diversity for pure breeds in Hawaii.

We do have predators but they are only a threat when they are little. We have owls, hawks ,mongoose, rats, cats, wild pigs and occasional wild dogs. I keep all babies in my basement until they are about the size of a hen. Then they are safe to roam. The flock lets me known if there are any intruders and the electric fence keeps the larger predators out . It’s a terrible smelly mess raising them indoors but worth it and they grow pretty fast so it’s not to many weeks.

I completely agree!!! Mine start for a few days in the living room, then basement, then garage, and finally the new 12' x 20' night time barn my husband built for me!!!

What a great feeling of relief when the little stinkys are completely out of the house. The electric fence does take away the worry. And, for the ducks, chickens, and small birds I have bird netting over their areas inside the electric fence. Only the grown geese go without netting above.
If I remember correctly, there are lots of loose wild chickens that live out your way as well. In these troubled times, the young birds are a true joy!

Yes soooooo many wild chickens I am constantly chasing them . It is such a relief when they get outside I’m grateful we don’t have any foxes, coyotes or bobcats. I used to live in Joshua tree and they were really hard to defend against.

Here are some updated pictures of my mixed breed crosses. 2 of the The white with grey patches are embden x Chinese crosses . The light grey dilute is also this cross.
One of white and grey patches is an embden x Chinese x toulouse cross.
The patches one with the largest knob is a African x embden cross .

The all grey goose in these pictures is a male. His mother is a pure pilgrim and father was a embden x Chinese (was white with little grey spots all over) so he is Pilgrim x embden/Chinese cross . I am going to keep him for breeding. He is surprisingly large. So much bigger than his mom and he is only 5 months old.

How do geese do in the desert,? No grass at least not here. I am thinking of raising grass in trays. Has anyone done that?

I know they will be fine with a water supply but it will be on the expensive side to raise them without grass in your yard.

Thank you for your reply. I have a lot to learn about desert raising of chicken and geese. No comparison to the many years of raising on grass
