I recently acquired some jumbo cotournix quail. I has been keeping them in 3x3 rabbit cages in the barn.

I went to a sale over the weekend and acquired a homemade rabbit pen cheap.

It's about 7 feet long and 3 feet wide and 2 foot tall. In the cage section. Legs keep it 3 feet off the ground.

The divided it in the middle with a foot wide box. And split that in half. With a door cut to each pen.

1 have 1 male and 5 females in each pen.

this type of pe I think is really good my quails love it they run around and lay eggs which is a sign they're happy

Would there be a danger of the bonking their heads at that height?

No it's higher than you think it is more than 6 feet high

I live in the city, Waco to be exact. Really trying to decide between a wire raised pen or ground pen. I've heard arguments for both. Raised healthier physically, ground mentally healthier. I have a great carport that provides fantastic shelter from the elements. I want to put it between two posts roughly about 4 feet across which would put it right between water and electrical outlets. More than enough room and the car will be no where near it so no worries about fumes. There are 2 on here I like alot. One is funny wuails the other barred rocks also on this thread. I would love to hear an opinion on this. Which should I go for?

I am relatively new to quails. It didn't even occur to me to put them off the ground so when we bought 5 quail chicks we put them in a large rabbit run and coop on the grass and we move them every few days for fresh grass and goodies to forage around for. They are so happy and they love rummaging for insects and things. We cover one end so that they can hide when they like (which is often). It's very low to the ground, but they never bash their heads on the wire because they have places to hide when they're scared.

When I first started looking into how quail are kept commercially, even on a small scale, in those raised wire cages with places for the eggs to roll, I was pretty horrified actually. These little, living birds love to run around, and they love to do what they're instinctively programmed to do, which is to forage. Ours seem pretty hardy - they love standing out in the rain. But when it gets much colder we'll move the run to a barn for the winter and give them wood chips to scratch around in on the floor.

None of this makes collecting eggs the easiest, but it only takes a few more minutes than it might for us, whereas a lot more happiness for the quails.

with my coop we have hay half and grass the other we move the cage often and don't worry about the eggs my quails have a nest in the hay with 10 eggs right now and when we move the cage the eggs don't roll around at all they stay right in their place.
