Show Me Your RUN!

Coops, coops, coops... That's all one ever hears.. I can find at least 200 examples of coop designs on this site.

What's hard to find is examples of how people frame their runs. Did you cement 4x4s in the ground and build off that? Did you bolt 2x4's together and tack them into the ground with long aluminum nails?

I really want to see a few detail pictures of your runs, showing how the walls are built, how you covered it and if you wish you did anything differently.

Ours is a wood frame on top and bottom. We dug a trench for the bottom part of the frame so nothing could dig in. I made a large "spool" with a patio umbrella stand and a piece of round wood on the other end of a long dowel so we could have netting over the top. This has worked like a charm for two years now with only minor repairs due to large chunks of ice falling off the pine trees above it this past winter.

Okay I don't have pics but here is a quick description of our current set up. we have a 24x12 dog kennel with poultry netting/ aviary netting and a 24x40 4ft high fence that is on mental posts and attached to trees. Also covered with netting. The entire thing is also surround one the ground with stone wall I but to keep critters from getting in. The run at the new farm will be pretty much the same, I will post pics when we get it done.

Here is our run that we build last week. The coop is being placed this morning. We still have lots to do. We did not bury the posts, but instead just built a frame just in case I decide I might move it someday. The door was a cheap made screen door from Home Depot that we cut down to size. We will tack wire on the inside of the door, replacing the screen. Wire will be buried all around the outside to prevent predators from digging. We'll cover the wire with mulch. The top will come later, but for now we will put up netting because we have tons of hawks.
We used pressure treated 2x4's but the bottom is 2x6. We used metal corner brackets for added strength. Instead of nails we used deck screw. Not sure if this is how we were supposed to do it though.
We too had a hard time finding pics with details. We are NOT carpenters to be sure, but we managed to do this. Have fun building yours.

[just built a frame :

That's pretty much my idea. Seems less expensive and easier than installing chain link. My husband wants to go the chain link route, which seems entirely too labor intensive to me. He also wants the run behind the coop, so as not to block the view of the front of the coop. I want to be able to see the run with the chickens in it.

Why does he have to make things so difficult?!

Oh, absolutely I want to see the chickens in the run. That’s the fun part. Ours will be placed to the left. Our total run cost so far is about $200.00. We used green welded wire so you can see into the run easier. I can imagine the chain link route would be much more expensive, but I’m not sure.

We buried sono tubes below the frost line, filled with concrete and put post stud hooks on them (like when you build a deck). Framed it all out and covered it with hardware cloth.

Here are some pics. of our 1st chicken run... we just finished it yesterday. I should have taken a pic. but I didnt and know its raining so on the next nice day I will............

We dug a trench and buried the chicken wire 3-4 inches down and added rock on top of it, then the dirt.

We still need a netting for the top.

Heres the chickies that will be living in it....
