We just sold our Speckled Sussex girls (we had 23 - 6 went to serve as a demo flock for extension and 17 went to a family with kids). Those girls are characters. I swear it was never a dull moment with them.
We let them explore one day while we were adding roofs to pens. This girl just about climbed into the roll of chicken wire.
One day, I got this next photo from a student worker. The chicken was fine, but suck. We changed the roost setup to prevent a repeat performance.
They love untying my shoes. If I double knotted them, they pecked my ankles instead.
We all got caught in the rain one day. I was standing under cover. The girls (who LOVE people) stood in the rain instead of taking three steps over to get under cover with us.
Taking advantage of the world's smallest roost.
I could probably go on, but I will spare you. I can't say they were the best layers. We usually got about 3 to 4 medium-sized eggs per hen per week. Not terrible, but nothing to write home about. They made up for it in pure personality.
I'm not sure if it was how they were raised (they were handled a lot) or a breed characteristic, but they were fun to have around.
