Show Off Your Coops!

My hubby modified a childs wooden playhouse (paid $199 for it but with shipping it came out to be $300)for me. I was upset when I first got it because the dimensions were VERY misleading. I thought it would be at least 4 by 4. It is only 43 inches by 41 inches. I can stand up inside fine but I am only 5'2. So we made due with what we got & it turns out I have a rooster to give away so I will only have 3 girls in it anyway. My hubby will be building a 4ft. by 12ft covered run for them to hang out in. Anyhow, here our the pics of what was done & I think it turned out great for us newbies with no real coop building skills! Just have to touch up some paint & maybe make our own feeder & we will be putting shingles on the nest box to keep it dry.....hope you like it! Let me know what you think!

Wife to the most awesome, patient, hard working guy ever! Homeschooling mama to 4 wonderful kiddos, ages 2-11 with 1 more on the way!! Looking to lead a more self sufficient life & have completely fallen in love with CHICKENS! & we share our home with Rocket our Boston terrier, & 3 fish. This is what my coops look like. They are suspended with 1/2" wire mesh floors for easy cleaning. They are all 4' wide by 8', 10', or 12' long (depending on quantity and breed type of the chickens). 4' of the coop is covered with roosts inside and peat moss for them to take dust baths in. They are far enough off the ground to make it hard for predators to get into and are covered with netting so wild birds cannot get in. They have worked great for me and I will be building more as my flock gets more diverse. I will try to get more pics of the inside to post later.

Here's mine. It's 5 x 10 It's basically finished except for some tweaking and a few last minute added details. I want to add dirt over the wire around the perimeter and plant some flowers or ground cover. I also want to paint a sign with the coop name which is The Feather Factory.

I don't think the hen house will really ever be done. I refer to it as a work in progress, as I keep changing things after I see them on this site.

Oh David I love yours and the whole setting. I would love to just sit there on the deck and watch the chicken antics.

To me, half the fun is the designing and building them too!

Our coop is not fancy. More utilitarian!

When we had the barn/garage/shop built we had them build the coop attached to the building.
It is right out our back door with a small yard between the garage and the house. The chickens free range in this area part of the day. I don't let them out on the rest of the property because of the predators around.

The coop itself measures 12 by 6 and has 12 nesting boxes. It has a fan in the summer and a heat lamp in the winter.

There is the main run that is actually in the back yard and then 3 more runs that go from the side of the coop and down the back of the garage/barn.
2 of these are used for the geese at night and during the day is used for a run for any chicks (right now I have 4)
We are going to bulid another run for the geese when it gets cooloer so I can have a permanent brooder run and shelter.

All the runs have cement footings all the way around and hardware cloth for the first 3 feet up (to keep out skunks and keep the chicks in.

Littlefeet,

I too sit and watch them.

Your right building the hen house was a lot of fun.

In fact if anybody in my area had a "coop raising" they could count me in.

Thanx again,

David

I started on Monday building a new mobile coop - so far it's going pretty well. It's a mini-barn - will eventually be on wheels. It's replacing an A-frame coop that I built back in March with alot of additional features that I've come to realize I wanted through having the hens for 5 months.

Hopefully we can finish it up over the weekend.
