The value of a good broody is priceless. Had one of my BBRed game hens hatch out 12 out of 12 eggs last week, all of which are still alive. I had two other BBReds sitting on eggs. One hatched 6 out of 15 eggs and let 3 chicks die the first day and the others were on the verge when I took them away from her and put them in the brooder. They are doing fine now. It rained last night and it got pretty cool and when I went to check on the last game hen, I found her off the nest walking around. I felt of the eggs and they were stone cold,. She had abandoned the nest.

At least I have found a good broody hen (at last).

That is just great! Are the chicks barred rocks? Good mothering hens are a must in my breeding programs.

No rocks here, just pure Dominiques. These chicks are from a pair of Doms I got from Sam Brush.

They have really nice barreding on them as well as some nice rose combs.

They are really nice. They come from Melody Hobbs' line.

Question: I've got 4 game mixes, all of which are almost 6 months old, and they have not started laying yet. Any ideas as to when I should expect to get eggs??

The problem is, the chicken is nearly 6 months old, and because the other rooster is the Alpha, this chicken has not tried to crow or anything, and is so skittish!

The first 2 pics are of Lulu (the one I thought was a hen)
The last pic is of the rooster, Elvis, who is also nearly 6 months old.

At what age do game roosters usually mature? If this one is indeed a cockrel, then I'm assuming it hasn't properly developed due to the Alpha rooster in the pen. ??

I'm really not sure what to do about this. I can't separate them right now, as I don't have another pen yet. And I can't let it free range, because I've already lost a few games due to predators.

He'll be fine in that pen. Just watch him when he get's to be 8 months old and older or when he starts acting cocky.
