Why do people keep game breeds ?

I have mine because they are so pretty. My first one little man came to us hurt, and we healed him up. Only for my big Delaware to hurt him again, he is getting better and we found something that I may have to take him back to the vet with he has a whole in his leg, right where he had hurt it when the other rooster tried to fight him through the fence. Didn't see it when he was there before, but it's a big hole. looks almost like someone shot him there (Could have been from the Delawares spur?). He can still run fast though even on one leg most of the time. So now it means another trip to the vet.

However I right now have what I am calling my Mexican Lilly in my incubator. little man bred with Lilly last night, my white Delaware so her egg is right now in the incubator.

I believe many of us breed them because of their beauty as well as their size. The fact that they don't normally need much from humans is always a good thing with any breed. My regular laying hens couldn't live like a game does, they need someone around them all the time for food, water, and gathering their eggs, as well as tons of attention. I know little man loves attention, but he also is as happy as can be when he is by himself. And they eat very little compared to the regular breeds.

After almost dying last year with a massive heart attack, I realized how much more relaxing life is when I spend time with my chickens, and to me I can relax so much more around my little game, at least he doesn't pester me for my food if I am eating or even my coffee. Believe me I have lost a few cups of coffee to my hens. It's a good thing I don't have a picnic table and ever decide to have the whole family eat outside. The hens and my big roosters would get it all. Little man just watches and if I decide he deserves a snack I give it to him, which is normally all the time, but he is patient.

I like hardy, tough and independent animals, that are close to the wild ancestors. I do like breeds that are helpless, meak or otherwise unthrifty. If I have to artificially enseminate an animal to ensure its propegation, then it should not be propegated in my opinion. I am a firm believer of natural selection... but on the other hand I also admire performance breeding, where only the best of the best get the chance to breed. Either way only the ones who prove themselves worthy get the chance to spread their genetic superiorty. Gamefowl are superior in my opinion. I have seen it in the feral populations of chickens in my hometown, where all appear to be gamefowl or have gamefowl traits.

With all that said, I just like them. They are a beautiful, diverse and healthy breed.

Yes I agree
I am a massive believer of natural selection and only best of the best who are able to breed and are close to their wild ancestors like the red jungle and grey jungle fowl.
The more natural the better without human intervention.
