Show Off Your Games!

He may not be an Einstein but a cock can learn after three years of trying that fighting through a pen is not worth effort. I have cock that has been used a lot for a lot of different things. He usually has free-range life going on around house but I also do also sorts of experiments on the poor dude. Rule is he does not fight with other birds through fencing although their are times when fighting in pasture is OK but not for long. Fights are kept short because his foe in pasture is not game and dogs get into him fairly quickly when he does fight especially through pens. Also lately he is able to get to pens only when I am out so I police him every time he tries to fight through pen and place him in another pen at house for a 4 hour time-out. He finally figured out not to fight through pen and can control his urge for at least two hours before I call him back. He better than dogs about coming in when called, at least faster. He has no self control when a bird is released from pen as when a broodcock is rotated between pens so he appears to understand the rules of the wire. I still do not need him causing trouble with broodcocks as that makes a 30 second job into a 5 minute one.

He has also gotten into habit of flirting with pullets / hens being conditioned for breeding with broodcocks. He does not waste time with other females that either are not ripe or are in with a cock.

Still took 3 years.

Very interesting observations. I rotate my cocks between pens and free range. I noticed different patterns of behavior especially between older and younger roosters. What I found is regardless of age/experience, when a cock/stag is first set free from his pen he is energized and wants to fight through the pen. The difference is that the older ones only do it for maybe an hour (or less) while the young ones will do it all day. Also the young ones a prone to actually kicking the fence, while the older cocks just taunt the younger ones into kicking the fence (damaging their rear toes). This is not universal, as I have one older cock who still kicks the fence (needless to say his rear toes are ugly and swollen with no toe nails).

I had one rooster who never attacked the fence and spent all day with hens/pullets. He would only attack another rooster if they were both out, but did not care when they were penned. I kept him out free-range most of the time because I knew I wouldnt have to babysit him. This is him. Black Snow (R.I.P).

Not really just shows you're level of maturity

So this is my raised garden bed turned chick coop. Lol.

I was building this for a garden box.. and I spent so much time building it to keep chickens out, I figured why not use it to keep chickens in... Needless to say my wife was NOT happy about the idea. (got into one of those "you have too many chickens" fight).
