So I got to find a blue hen then, kinda rare up north here

Blue's may not be rare, just referred to by another name if color is the main descriptor. Blues are simply a darker version of the black breasted reds I have where the blue have darker hackles and hens are generally darker than wild-type. Look into what a typical blue-faced Hatch looks. You will notice they vary quite a bit but some will look wild-type only darker.
