Those are eclipse hackle feathers. Mine have them as well. They come during July and are dropped starting about now to be replaced by regular hackle feathers until following July.

That's really neat ! I didn't know if other birds had it or not, but it's neat to know someone else has some.

It is not rare in games, American at least, although most people do not pick up on it. It also appears to vary with temperature. When temperature is very hot as eclipse feathers are coming in, the feathers are blacker and shorter. This year with cooler summer mine had eclipse feathers that almost have points but at least some black evident.
