Show Off Your Games!

Had a second week candling session this morning. I think there were maybe 4 that weren’t fertile out of maybe 50 eggs. Glad I did it, one egg was cracked. Stopped that bomb from going off. I set up a new incubator yesterday and it’s holding temp and humidity really well. I’ll set a couple hundred eggs in it this morning.
I am running a custom made incubator with 72 egg capacity. I need to check on it about every 6 hours when weather changes. Only every 12 hours when weather stable. A 22 egg Nurture Right 360 needs to be checked just daily.

My early season hatch rate poor, 40 to 60%. Too much exposure to low temperatures prior to egg collection. Later cohorts doing much better.

Here is something some of you guys might be interested in. It is designed to contain 3 singly penned hens that will have a cock rotated over them for 24 hours every third day. There is a gate between adjacent pens so cock can walk from one pen to next in sequence. Pieces of plywood serve as gates and will keep hens from seeing each other when at ground level. Previous design we found hens could be trained to fly out, have some fun with cock, then go back on pen on their own. Too much flying. Cock will do all the moving this time. He goes through pens in sequence, then walks around to other side to start over. Still a little training, but games really good for that.

That might work. I’ve brought hens to the rooster put her in his pen, she square and in a couple of minutes you can put the hen back in her own pen. Less stress for everybody. I have two broodcocks that I’ve made mean as hell handling them to move them.

Last round I let a pullet out on open floor and then let cock out. After he covered her I baited pullet back into pen before another pullet was released. We did that 3 times each day. Cock did have enough time to reload his squirt gun between shots. That required four pens and gave poor hatch.

Your pens in background are like what I want to build for fly pens. I need four to five fly pens that also serve as quarantine pens. Some of my birds go out pretty regular and they need to be kept separate from balance of flock.

I use those for single mating pens. Not big enough for fly pens
Yeah I’m the same way. Pretty regular my birds are in contact with other people’s birds so I isolate them when they come home.

My flypen need to be 10' tall, with fronts so a game rooster can be free-range outside with conflicts. We used to use flypens for single mating the highest end brood fowl.

Mine are close to that. I don’t ever have a rooster free ranging. I leave the front of the fly pen in wire. I’ll put a little feed in front of them to attract the hens. Roosters work better when the girls are around
