Almost lost my shamo cock today. He got ahold of a frog or toad. I didn't think anything of it so left him alone. Later he didn't come running up to me when I went out. He was up under the grapevine and was greatly stressed. I drug him out. He was staggering and shaking his head till he fell over. He was making an odd sound when he breathed. Then I realized his throat was swelling and he was having trouble breathing. I got benadryl in him as quick as I could. In about 30 minutes he was beginning to feel better. Now a couple hours later he is back to hunting and scratching. I don't think he ate it. I couldn't find anything in his crop so it must have just filled his mouth full before he realized he didn't need to be eating that thing. Scary!

They are all gross to me. I looked it up. Had no idea we had such here. The symptoms match. I should have rinsed/wiped his mouth out as well it says. I told my husband Bogart can't die....I don't have another and Ish is a heck of a long way away! I told him they say you should always have more than one...may have to rethink that. I keep the benadryl for when the cats get bit by copperheads. They just won't leave them alone.​

With the buffo the poison glands are just behind the eyes. Normally what happens is the dog or critter will pester the toad and they will secrete a milky white toxin. If this stuff get into the mouth or eyes then it gets ingested. With dogs we always advise to rinse out mouth and gums being careful that they don’t swallow the stuff. Toads tend to hang around feed dishes and buggy type places outside. Personally I have the same no tolerance policy for them as I do raccoons, possums and rats.
I am defiantly an enabler so I would say. Split the pen and groups in two and let the stag visit with each group every other day or something like that. The Araucanas can keep the shamo pullets company. Who know if come next spring I don’t travel up your way and maybe bring you some fresh blood? Recently picked up some white shamo that look very promising.

I saw him with the toad near some tomato plants. I will be doing some weeding.
