Ladies and Gentlemen, we have: First Diaper. This was the smallest one we have, and it's STILL too big! She'll grow into it though, and in the meantime it's good to get her used to it now, even though it looks like she's got a drag chute coming off her rear.

Another chaotic weekend. Our oldest queen, Ko, was trampled by a horse and killed. She was the best flock guard I had, and the most intuitive. She kept the birds in that got past Narcissus, and would patrol the property, deterring predators. She didn't have enough time to properly train a replacement, as the kittens had just gotten spayed and neutered and were just taking their first runs outside. I now have to pay closer eyes on the birds, as my husband is afraid to let anyone out now.

Missy is learning that outside can be good. She won't go anywhere near the back where the rest of the birds are, but she will sit out front with me while the easter egger chicks play in their playpen outside (It's too nice for them to spend the day in the growout pen - but they are a bit too small to be out on their own) She sticks close, but samples the grass and finds the best rocks she can for her crop. She likes it enough that she claimed the front patio door as her own. The kittens like to look out of it and climb on the screen. She drives them off so that she can sit inside on the cool entryway tile watching the world go by from the safety of the incubator room.

Pale girl, while still lame, is keeping up with the flock for the most part now. Her buddies are giving her less constant supervision, which is a good sign!

First pheasant of the season hatched today!


I left mom and Missy home alone for the entire day yesterday, and came home to find that the house was still intact! Woo hoo! While out at the range, I was given a battle name and a name tab:

As for the name tag thing, I'm guessing either Goose or Napoleon? I dunno why the second one. It's just funny.

It was hard the first day - she was born in my closet. I got her mother as a kitten. She was the last of the line, outliving her mother and the two of her brothers that I kept. She was nearly 15, and getting a bit senile, which is likely why she ended up in the path of a mare kicking her heels up for the spring to begin with. She was one of a kind.. She was the only cat who could completely ignore 2 geese biting her tail trying to get her to move. Missy could move her, but she had to tackle her to do it... She was definitely the best cat I ever had.
This afternoon Missy was bullying my mother's cat instead. They were sitting by the patio door hissing at each other.... Missy won as usual...

They picked Goose for me (cue top gun music).. So now my daughter and I are Mama Goose and Gosling...

Hello! We are new duck owners. We never thought we would have pet ducks but my son got them from a school project, so any advice is appreciated! Tomorrow will mark a week of us having them. We're learning little by little but we are completely in love with them already!

Bean has yet another surprise for me - she's a tortie! Her head is a lovely mishmash of grey, white, and reddish-brown. Both Hils and I adore tortoiseshell kitties, and as it just so happens, we both recently lost our beloved childhood tortie kitties within the same year, Snickers and Bashi. So we're delighted that we now have a tortie duck to carry on the tradition. <3

I'll try ti get some close-up shots, but she hates my tablet...oddly enough she shows no such fear for Hils' cell phone. Go figure.

I'm sewing like a MAD LADY so I don't have time to catch up on all the happenings (i will later tonight) BUT I just got off the phone with VPI Pet Insurance and really wanted to share this information with you all!

They offer coverage for Ducks and Geese! They have an exclusions list so if you have another type of fowl you would have to call them to find out if they will cover your pet, but their rates are actually REALLY great! For ChaCha it would be $22/month (first and last down payment) for BOTH preventative (beak trimming, nail clipping, wing clipping, vaccines, bloodwork, dewormings, etc) and medical expenses (which is for other odd charges like broken legs or bite wounds and includes heck up costs etc) It's all reimbursement so you do have to pay up front UNLESS your vet will invoice you - then you can send the invoice in and get your reimbursement payment before you actually pay the vet. For ChaCha it's $50 deductible per occurrance (so if she were to get worms, I would be responsible for the first $50 of charges for everything related to that worms incident incuding checkups etc) up to $2000 per occurance and $7000 per year.

There's not a ton of info on their website for their bird policies yet, but the rep I just spoke to was VERY knowledgeable (855 874 4945 ext 6227 - Kevin Mayer)
After all the vet bills I've watched pile up with my birdy friends I just really wanted to share this =) I know it's not perfect, and it's not always an option for everyone, but for those of you who o use traditional vet services for just a bird or two this might be the ticket! I hope this helps someone out there!


I actually went there seeking info for coverage on a dog we may adopt and on a whim asked about ChaCha So glad I did!
