Show off your house ducks!

I have three house ducks! 8 month old white mallards. I had them diapered but their diapers fell apart

so now I have a penned off area for them that I vacuum daily and carpet clean weekly.
We spend the majority of our time at the beach or park though. So just when I'm at work or class they have to stay inside.

Here's the crew! Finn, my drake in the back. Jake in the middle,
and TreeTrunks in the front with the freckles on her beak.

Us, napping in the sun.

Road Trip!!!

Melissamerry, I love your ducks! They are adorable and you have awesome photos of them. So, you take them to the ocean? How do they act there? I worry about taking my duck to the ocean, but I'd really like to be able to.

When they were a couple of weeks old we made our way to the ocean for the first time, and then we started going weekly. I wanted to make sure they became confortable there. I always make sure it's low tide too.

They pretty much act like little kids do; they chase the waves back and then run to me when the waves retaliate. They love chasing the seaweed that flies by too.

Each one has a special activity. Finn chases bugs, Jake sits in hole of water, and TreeTrubks collects rocks and seashells. I kid you not. She picks up so many things and drops them at my feet!

Have you moved to Cali yet?

Aww! I'd love to see TreeTrunks making her collections. You should try to get it on video.

We're in California now. The weather is beautiful! I've taken Bunny for a walk on the beach in her stroller, but I haven't let her walk around on her own. I'd like to find a more secluded beach, because at the beaches we've gone to, there are always a ton of people around and kids trying to grab her. What beach do you take your ducks to?

I take my disabled house duck (a crested rouen) to visit my mother occasionally. His favorite thing is to pick up a burger at Dairy Queen on the way. Since he rides on my lap he always draws attention at the drive through - all the folks working inside come to say hi to him and he always gets a "pup cup" of free ice cream.

How sweet! Does he actually eat the hamburger, or are you saying that you get the hamburger?

I discovered recently that my duck likes to watch the Wii menu on TV. She's not so interested in TV shows or the actual video games, but she really likes the Wii menu.

Sorry I have to vent but as a house duck owner there are a few things I've seen posted in the last week. I've noticed that a member of BYC finds it in their own best interest to report people to health departments for keeping house ducks/geese. I have a couple thoughts on this:

I keep a diapered house duck. She doesn't smell, my house doesn't smell. There isnt duck poop all over the place. She's not neglected and she's better behaved then any dog I've owned or met. She gets more baths than I do. She is always being invited back to the hotels/motels we've stayed at. Cities/towns in my state have started to include ducks as "Household Pets". I've had cleaners, maintenance, parents of my kids friends and others who come in who don't realize I have a duck until they see I have a ducky following me.

If someone wants to report me for keeping a indoor pet that they don't feel should be indoors I have to ask whether this person has ever had a dog poop on their floor. If they've ever had their couch, cushions, clothes or carpet chewed up by a dog. Ever had a dog bolt it out the door causing you to chase them three blocks away. I've experienced this before. I'm yet to experience any of this with Soleil. That's right, I have one duck for all those who don't believe a duck can survive without other ducks!

Phew that feels better! Not everyone will agree on everything, but for those of us lucky enough to have a duck or two (or 3) sharing our space, we know how cuddly, loving and intelligent ducks can be!

I was just thinking the other day how I would love to have a house duck :) I just think that would be unique.
What kind of diapers does it take? How often do you have to change the diaper? Hope you don't mind
me asking.
