Show off your house ducks!

Duck diapers consist of two parts- the diaper (I use disposable baby diapers) and the harness that holds the diaper on. The harness also helps for leashes and tethers for carseats. Diapers have to be changed every couple of hours and its not recommended letting a duck wear a diaper harness overnight.

Aww!  I'd love to see TreeTrunks making her collections.  You should try to get it on video.

We're in California now.  The weather is beautiful!  I've taken Bunny for a walk on the beach in her stroller, but I haven't let her walk around on her own.  I'd like to find a more secluded beach, because at the beaches we've gone to, there are always a ton of people around and kids trying to grab her.  What beach do you take your ducks to?

That's such a bother when kids chase the ducks! Especially when they all run in different directions and I have to collect them all again. I carry a large tote bag for that purpose. When I sense danger like dogs, or kids, I scoop up the babies and hide them.

The best beach that I go to is called campus point. Its on UCSB's campus and its usually a bunch of college kids. They know better than to chase ducks....most of the time.

Where did you move to? Long beach? There's got to be a quieter beach somewhere.

Yep, I'm in Long Beach. Long Beach (the beach, not the city) is so crowded all the time. I'll have to find a more secluded beach. You say you stick all your ducks in a tote bag when you see kids coming. So, does that mean they don't mind being handled? My duck is imprinted on me and knows I'm her mom, but she still hates being picked up and will run away when she sees my hands reaching for her. That makes me nervous about letting her run around in public.

Here is a question for everyone with house ducks. What do you feed them? I'm just curious to see what kind of variety there is out there. Lewie loves hard cat food, but he also is fed salads, crumble on occasions, bugs and grass from when he's outside foraging. Does anyone else allow their duckies to have/try unusual foods?

My Daisy gets her crumbles, cracked corn, veggies & fruits. She also steals meat from the dogs & she begs for goldfish crackers. I don't give her many but if given the chance, she would eat a whole box! My folks always make sure to keep a box for her on hand for her visits.

(Video from her hatchday...I know, I sound annoying. I had a cold)

Soleil gets a layer pellets from a feed store but her treats are everything from salads to fruits. Her favorite treats are swimmies (feeder fish), bananas, mealworms and Meow mix tubs with fish pieces are her new treats.

I tried to get Daisy to eat swimmies but she had no interest. She also has no interest in bugs, slugs or "normal duck treats" like that.
Sigh...
I think my duck is broken...

Mine are not imprinted. It depends on their mood if they want to be picked up or not. Most of the time they allow me to scoop them right up. Especially if they see a dog. They run right to me or the bag. Maybe I'm the lesser of the two evils.

I know they make it easier for me to grab when I get down lower. I always try to grab from the back too. I noticed they get more scared when they see a hand coming for them head on. And treats! My pocket is always full of treats in case of an emergency.

Hah do they like fruits and veggies?

The atleast seem bonded to you. How did they act when you first brought them home?

This thread is such fun. I HAVE to take our ducks to the beach now. It has been decided.

Our ducks are outdoors, but since the female started sitting, the drake has been rather lonely. I've opened the front door and let him hang out in the tiled foyer, but not on the carpet. I haven't worked out a diaper for him. When I tried putting on a prototype, it was quite the struggle. So I abandoned that effort for now. But he sure was happy and proud when he sneaked around the barricade and got into the kitchen. He told me all about it while I carried him back to the foyer.

As soon as he saw the TV he was captivated, neck stretched out, the inquisitive 'quack quack quack?'. Hilarious!

Scovy Momma- Daisy's begging dance is sooooo funny. Our little girl does a similar thing when she knows I have food, but she obviously needs practice.

Feeder fish are a lot of fun for our ducks. Warning: the following video is not vegan approved!
