Show off your house ducks!

I'm new to this stuff and my runners haven't even hatched yet lol, but I'd like to keep the 2 of them in the house as pets, but I'm very curious on HOW you guys do it... I hear ducks are very messy, NTM they poop anywhere at any time. I have 4 kids (11 and younger) and don't want to have germs like that floating around (nor do I want to be following them with a lysol wipe to clean up the poop lol). Someone please explain how that works out! LOL

People do it different ways, and some people even have designated duck rooms! I have a pen in the living room for my duck with food, water, a house, and toys in it that I keep her in when I'm not home, busy, sleeping, or whatever. I clean the pen every 2-3 days and I have a hepa filter in the house to cut down on the smell. Being in Southern California, I'm able to always keep a window open, too. At least four hours a day, but usually more like 6 or 8, I diaper my duck and let her waddle around the house, changing the diaper ever 3-4 hours as needed. Works for us!

I'm new to owning ducks. Well A duck. I found her by herself at a fishing lake, nothing around. She chirped for hours while we were there, searching for mom I assume. But alas, nothing. I couldn't leave her, knowing she was alone and so tiny. So she's been in my bathtub for the past 2 weeks. I've done a lot of research on food, treats, socializing and the like. I take her outside almost everyday to get some sun and grass. I've introduced her to water, and she likes bathing and splashing around.
I also hold her a lot. I'm looking into getting diapers because when I leave her alone, she chirps and I feel terrible about it. At this point, she follows me around when were outside and only allows me to pick her up, not anyone else in my family.
Question is... I don't really have the outside space for a run/coop/pond for her. I know you can keep them as inside pets, and I'd like to learn about that.
I know she's lonely right now... But I definitely don't have room for another duckling.
What can I do to ease the loneliness?? Are there things I can put in the tub with her to keep her entertained? She has a blanket and stuffed animal that she likes to cuddle with.

•No, the tub isn't filled, lol.
•I don't know what kind of duck she is, whether she's male or female, etc. I don't know anything about them really, but want to learn. She still is covered in all down, but I'm feeling little prickly spots coming in, feathers im guessing, so I think she's in the 3-4 week old range?

Any help is appreciated!!! Thank you!!!

maybe a photo of her would help us identify her? Sounds like she's really latched onto you as her protector/provider

So the adventure ducks and I are going on a 3 hour drive to visit my mother for the weekend, and as I'm packing up the car, my mom sends me this text.

"Getting reading for the granducks to visit"

My parents have a small pond for their water turtle and she's stocking the pond with goodies for the ducks! I thought it was too cute not to share!

That's so awesome that your mom is so taken with your ducks! I don't think most moms, or people in general would be.

I have been loving reading this thread. As a bird lover you get so tired of all the negative stigma against birds in general. I mean seriously, dogs and cats cause allergies and their poop stinks. That's a part of having pets. You either deal with it or you don't have pets. It's funny reading about other people's ducks. Growing up we had Huey, Duey, and Luey. They would tap on the basement windows and all shove thier heads in to be petted. It was really the only time the wanted to be petted. Guess they had to have it on their own terms. lol. I can't tell you how many times they would sneak in the house if their door was left open while we took groceries in. My mom was always sending me to shoo them out of the garage so there wouldn't be poop in there. For some reason they were facinated with the cars. I think they also knew their food was stored somewhere in there. They didn't really like being petted but whenever I was outside reading they would come cuddle up next to me or within ten foot radius. To comment on the question about dogs and ducks, we had a labrador golden retriever mix who thought the ducks were her puppies, and honestly, I think they thought they were her puppies too. We got them when they were ducklings and she took a keen interest in them, but never tried to eat them. Whenever she went outside, they would come running up and usually get trampled by her. Then they would take off after her. If she ran to the fence to bark at people, they would do their mock flying to get them to the fence faster so they could quack at the offender. They were obsessed with her dog tags. They would attack them relentlessly, usually while she was drinking from the duck pond. When she got tired of it, she would bop them on the head with her paw, which was really humorous when they were in the water. She's dunk them and they'd pop up fiesty for more. If they got too lippy with her, sometimes litterally going after her lips, she would take their heads or neck in her mouth and gently yet firmly pin them to the ground until they calmed down and left her alone. She NEVER once harmed them. That being said, my sister got a dog when my parents dog was towards the end of her life. The new dog harrassed the ducks because we were used to our old dog not hurting them, so we didn't make the ground rule of don't touch the ducks. After the old dog died, the new dog ended up killing all three ducks by biting their necks. She didn't eat them or tear them apart, so we suspect she was trying to copy the older dog's behavior but lacked the maturity and a soft mouth our older dog had had. So with ducks and dogs make sure you lay ground rules. It can be done, but you do have to be careful. I think it has a lot to do with the dog's temperment.
