Show off your house ducks!

Hehe "dumb butt". <3 I wonder if maybe it IS because he's so squat and chubby? I mean, he's a top-quality call duck, squat and chubby is practically a given. And he always falls off his ramp, LOL! Wonder if Wobs and Princey share a common ancestor. :p
Well actually they do!!! The breeder you got Wobs from bought whites from art lundgrend in NY which is where the breeder I got Prince charming from bought his whites from. I bought prince when the breeder stopped breeding. So both came from Art Lungrend!

Wait...is this the same drake with the black feather on his head just like Wobs? Are they brothers?!

Well they wouldnt be brothers but might be cousins! He had a black feather on his head as well! Breeder said it was because a long while back he had a snowy in his lineage...When are the chocolate eggs due.

Monday! They just went into lockdown. I am SO nervous!! That's really cool about Art's birds, though. So THAT explains that pesky black feather, there was a snowy in there somewhere!

Seriously! Ducks are probably one of the most successful group of birds in existence, they're thriving all over the globe, and yet every time I see Wobbles walk straight off the side of the bed I just shake my head and wonder how.
This made my morning!

Wobbles is wonderful!

Mama Saxony is in her favorite spot in the living room, and giving me her usual angry tail fan and hiss greeting, so I think she is feeling a little better. I have to check her over for occult injury today, but I couldn't bring myself to over stress her by handling her after that yesterday. She gives me a ton of attitude, and bites hard enough to leave spectacular bruising, but I am happy to see that when push came to shove, she knew I would protect her and take care of her. Normally, I can call her all I want, she just gives me the stank eye and ignores me. Yesterday, as soon as she saw me and heard me call, she made a beeline for me, dragging one wing and a Khaki Campbell drake. She did this up a snowbank, hurdled the trunk of a large bush we cut down last summer, and took a flying leap off the ice flow by the back door onto the kitchen floor. Of course she isn't going to let me cuddle her anytime soon, no matter how much I want to. I feel bad for her mate Gunther, so I may drag him in eventually as well. (He likes to be cuddled) He is in a full molt, so the house will look like there was some sort of tragic accident at a down comforter factory, but they will have each other (no matter how bad a husband he was yesterday)...

Down comforter factory, hehe! Forgive me for laughing, I know it's a sad situation but I love how you always manage to crack a joke even in the worst situations. I'm so happy that she's feeling better and is getting back to her old grumpy self. How is Gunth holding up without his lady love?

We have finally solved the mystery! Art said it was because he bought a white a whole long time ago that was half snowy and he didnt know until babies starting popping out a bit off color. He said that most never show any sign of the snowy in their lineage. I bought prince for cheaper than normal because of that black feather. He could have easily gone for 200 dollars but because of that black feather I got him for only 50.

Niiiice :p Funny thing is, I haven't seen Wobbles' "lucky feather" for some time now. He's just starting his summer molt, but I don't think I've seen any trace of black on his head for several months. I had a cat once who was born with a black spot on her head, but as she got older she turned completely white. I wonder if this is a similar thing?

Either way, I'm a bundle of nerves right now...first I gotta get through the hatch, then their first vet visit, then I have to worry about how on earth I'm gonna keep Wobbles and the babies separated while giving them both the attention they need, and THEN I have to worry about how to ship off the excess male ducklings!

Maybe you can work out some sort of deal with the local TSC to give the ducklings to them? That will be soooo cute with the little ducklings at the vet! Why do you have to keep wobbles seperate? I once had a silkie rooster raise a brood of his own chicks? Maybe you and wobbles can both be parents? Maybe wobbles will think that after all this mating with you, you have finally layed eggs and hatched them out? lol.

Gunther is his classic oblivious self, although he has not bonded with any of the other duck clans. Each breed seems to like to keep separate, except for Ducky the scovy, whose hens are a bit young for his tastes (he hangs with the pekins, enough so that I labeled the first pekin egg of the season (dropped randomly in the mud of course, because, Pekins) as a moulard; and the great Cassanova of a Khaki Cambell, who likes his ladies large... (Hysterical to watch) So Gunther is by himself, despite being surrounded by other birds. My mother would certainly love to have him back - he would sit in her bedroom at the door of her bed doing the mallard style grunt. She says he likes to sing to her, and hated when we put him into the bathroom at night.
Of course, I have scrubbed nearly all the ducksplosion off the bathroom (although I spied a chunk of poop close to 7 feet up on the wall, so I'm going to have to do a search for more stragglers) I took paint off in places making sure I had everything scrubbed well, so I will likely paint later in the week.... And then I'll bring him back in. They hate diapers, but I hate scrubbing floors more, so that will have to be part of our arrangement, along with a permanent residence for them in the house. Having given away my giant breed dog crate to a young couple starting out with a mastiff, I lost the obvious, so I will have to brainstorm on an inside enclosure where they can get a break and go commando in the evening... Lots of logistics - they are large birds - and their babies are HUGE - the ones that got stuck in their eggs are bordering ginormous, and most are still fully covered in down.... But are oh so precious when they play tag and go running back and forth across the house for fun (the noise from those little feet!!) I'm considering night time summer housing for the saxonies as part of the multiple grow out pen/specialized housing build I'm getting ready for in the garage. (If my husband is lucky, I'll let him keep the tractor in there but I have pretty much claimed it in the name of all things bird related) It's going to be a busy spring!!!
