Show off your house ducks!

Heh, yeah, that's a possibility. If they don't pair up we're gonna have Wobbles fixed. We really wanted him to have babies, but if she's gonna suffer stress from him forcing himself on her or I have to suffer through another year of bitten ankles and bruising with no eggs to show for it, we're going to go ahead with it.
Fascinating. I had no idea you could fix a male. I don't blame you at all if it comes to that. Neither you nor Beanie needs to experience the hormones. And not Wobbles, the hormones. He can't help it. Little sweet drake boy. Do males have testes internally where the testosterone is produced? I know they have a penis but wasn't sure about the rest. But hopefully the two littles will bond and you will have kiddos.

This link has a picture of a testicle that was removed with the innards while processing. Caution, graphic!

I had no idea that they were so large!

It's not a decision we're taking lightly, and as I said, if Bean pairs with Wobs then it'll be perfect! But neutering a male is way safer than spaying a female. As far as behavior, my doc says maybe yes, maybe no. He's still so young and full of testosterone that the removal of his lil' bits could very well curb his violent mating; we'll have a better idea once the season is over and he'll either keep on truckin' or will calm down considerably. Dr. Shrunk has been doing this for 30+ years and is the best avian surgeon I know. I trust her opinion.

Curiously, how much is the surgery? I know it can be a much as $1500 in a hen, but haven't ever heard about costs for the boys.

We were quoted at $500, most of which is just for the cost of anesthesia. It's basically a ducky caponization and is usually done via endoscopy. Neat, huh? ...As for the procedure itself, I'm not sure if it's just the, er...marbles, or if they amputate the. Um. Corkscrew. ...This is awkward.

Hey, also I've been meaning to ask, how'd you get that awesome backpack setup? Wobs is a bit small for a standard-sized backpack, but I'd love to get him something that can be strapped in but still allows him to poke his head out.

And yes, the looks from passers-by when they see a duck in the car just can't be beat. <3
I picked up a couple of them from Big Lots for about $25! I've seen them at Target too but without the backpack straps which I loved because I could carry her around easier that way & still shop.
