Show off your house ducks!

400

These are my duckie babies, and goodness do I love them!I am fairly new to the duck world, these two are my first. Not sure if I have male or female or one of each. I have had them since hatchlings and have tried everything to figure out the sex (well, almost everything). :) I am enjoying everyone's pictures!

Post a video of them quacking. Voice is the easiest way to tell the ladies from the gents!

@Amykins you must tell us about bean and said watermelon! The visual in my head is just wonderful!
And what awful kids at the park! Missy looks to me for reassurance around strangers. She asks for kisses from me and keeps her head pressed up close. Saxonies are bred for feather softness, so people love touching her. She is still getting used to people burying their hands in her feathers going "OMG it's so SOFT!!!" At least she is a trooper about it!

oh boy. Saxonies are soft. I'd be one of those burying my hands in her feathers and kissing her. She is very keen looking to u for reassurance around strangers. Blessed smart girl.

I had no idea, either! And I agree, I love how she presses her head against you when she wants comfort. I'm kinda jealous, hehe!

As for the watermelon phobia, It started when I got a nice ripe one since it's summertime, prime wadermeln time! I sliced off the top and put it in a bowl so the ducks could have a field day, and what does Bean do? Yelp and run under the table, shivering like a chihuahua. So I picked off a few smaller pieces for her, thinking maybe that would trigger her "hey, food" instinct, but nope, she turned her head and stuffed her bill into her feathers instead! So it was up to Wobbles to put on a brave face and eat Bean's share of wadermeln for her. We all must make sacrifices, I suppose.

Oh that makes me mad about the stupid kids. I can't think about that. Hopefully if you go back the same gang won't be there.

On to better things: I love how she sat in your lap and clucked cheerfully. It seems some birds for the most part hate hands. Mine do. I can get my face or head really close to them and they don't flinch but the hands and they are off like rockets. Somehow they know what hands are for.

Yeah, that's how she is, too! Faces fine, hands, NOPE. I wish she could make the connection that my hands are connected to the head she seems to like so much. :p

I will try to get a good video of them soon, my issue is that they stop once they see mme. They are mamas duckies for sure!

We took 'em to the park today, and they were in 7th heaven. It got cut short however, when a group of kids came by and asked to hold her. I told them she was afraid of people and that it was best to leave her alone, but they responded by chasing her around and throwing handfuls of grass at her! Poor Bean darted under the bench to escape but one of the littler ones crawled under there and she ran for the hills. My fiance and I had to tag team her to get her back in her carrier after that. Ugh, horrible, nasty children...even my ducks listen better than they did. Wobbles straight up attacked their shoes, so that's why they focused their attention on Bean.
Ugh, mean people suck, especially little ones. Did you throw rocks at them? They are allergic to rocks being thrown at them. They break out in lumps.

Update on Darkwing: Lil Peep is getting better acquainted with the pups and all is going well. His favorite English peas make the situation a lot more pleasant for him and a lot funnier for us. The beagle still couldn't care less about him. The mini poodle is still untrustworthy. But Addie, the Pyr who is about 500 times his size, has decided to be his friend and protector. She cleans up behind him, eating the peas he misses even though she clearly doesn't like peas. She keeps the poodle in line, making her lay down in one corner of the room anytime Peep is around, and she checks on him any time the poodle gets too close or she thinks he has gotten hurt or scared. He's not quite okay with that; most of the time, her getting close enough to check on him is what scares him. But I think they are working things out and I hope it will become a sweet little friendship. My mom knew a long time ago those were the best breed of dogs to have as protectors, guess she was right!

Also, thanks to all for the suggestions on water sources and occupying toys. We have found a solution that still gives him plenty of floor space and keeps his bedding a lot drier. It's also easier for me to clean and refill as often as I have to. And special thanks to @Scovy Momma for the pill bottle toy idea. He was scared of it at first but my niece used it to keep him occupied last night while I was cleaning up his cage and now that he's learned what it's all about he plays with it all the time. Its in a different spot every time we check on him and he empties the treats out a couple of times a day (we only keep it about half full at a time)!

LOL! Sadly, no...their parents were only 20 feet away and I didn't want to start anything, despite the fact they clearly don't know thing one about reining in their dumb tiny people-grubs. Grumble. I wish I had. If it happens again I don't care how many people stare at the crazy lady making mouth-noises, I'mma protect mah ducks!
