Show off your house ducks!

Haaaaa! Cute lil' afro duck. What a sweetie. She goes everywhere, you say? So do my babies, but if you got any recommendations for pet-friendly establishments let me know, my list is kinda short and it'd be nice to find some new businesses to take 'em to!

Winter thoroughly enjoyed her first fish frenzy in the tub! I felt terrible for the little fishies though ): After she looked at me like 'momma that's all you got me?' Spoiled stinker! (;

LOL glad she was able to get the hint, took Bean a half hour of confused staring before I had to resort to scooping 'em into a cup for her. Wobbles understood right away that swimmy shiny things = food, but it took him twenty minutes to catch even one his first time. Now he's a pro!

Hi all!

I'm new to BYC and am loving reading all the info this site has. We've recently found a duckling on the side of the road that we've taken in and he's become part of the family. As he's getting older now my partner and I are debating about whether he should be a house pet or not. Is there anyone else on here that has just one duck kept inside? Do they get depressed or bored during the day?

Hi Fergus,

One lone duck kept outdoors is not a happy duck. I think you should go ahead and bring him inside. If you can't be there with him 24/7, I think you need to get a second duck. Most of us with solo duckies are home all the time, or bring them with us to work!

Really?! It took Winter all of about 15 seconds to catch her first 5 little fish! I was in shock! Lol

@Amykins That watermelon story is wonderful!!!! Bean is such a character! We need more pictures of her cuteness, and wobbles, because he is Cute with a capital c...

Still raining like crazy here. One corner of the field is a swamp. Missy goes up to the door to the yard and bathes in the splashing rainwater, but that is about as outside as she wants to be. I'll be giving her another set of ducklings soon, which should make her happy, and will keep her from fussing over the babies that are due to hatch in a week and a half under one of my scovies (and getting her butt kicked by a bird half her size.)
She is really a useful summer babysitter, and we both get a diaper respite while she is working...

Just about dark enough to do the chicken move... Hopefully Missy won't wake up the majority of the chickens when I move the babies in. She always has commentary for what I do in that pen.... Very loud commentary....

Hi & welcome to BYC! I had one Muscovy inside as a house duck but she was never alone really in the dogs' room when I went to work. She went everywhere with me that I can take my dogs & some places that no one really noticed her in her backpack that they would notice a dog

I have a new little Muscovy baby that will be a lone ducklet like Daisy was so it can be done you just have to put in the time with them, but that goes with most all pets.
If it's just the one you really need to give them lots of attention. It's like having a toddler that never gets older, just smarter as to what they can try to get away with around you

Does anyone have house ducks and house chickens? I have 4 house chickens (a serama roo, a standard cochin hen, a silkie hen and a polish hen) and I've been pondering on adding a muscovy duck to the house flock for awhile now. I've researched them a lot, but of course there isn't much relevant info on keeping them like part of the family. I don't doubt that they would get along if raised with care, but I worry about them getting along a bit too much.. I've heard of male ducks attempting to breed with chicken hens and hurting them. I would prefer a male muscovy as they don't turn in to Broodies From Hell in the spring, but if he tried to breed with my silkie or some such it'd be the death of her. I know that my house rooster is very randy and is always looking for an outlet, namely soft things (mercy on all those poor slippers he's stolen,) but he's also a chicken. It would be amateur of me to compare them. Anyone have any input?

Might seem odd coming from someone with a rooster in the house, but how do ya'll deal with the noise of Call Ducks in the house? Can they be heard down the hall in another room with something like a fan on? Are they quiet through the night? As much as I adore muscovy, a call duck might be a better choice if I have to worry about my hens getting smushed by a heavy muscovy. They're lighter and mighty cute, just noisy! My birds stay on one side of the house, opposite side from the bedroom, down a hall and behind two doors past another large room, so we don't hear them when sleeping. That's the important thing. My husband tolerates a lot for my sake having these animals, and he loves them, but he's drawn a firm line over noises so loud they break that "barrier" and start disturbing sleep.

aww mine love fishies, my hubby was amazed. It took my two Pekins 30 secs to annihilate a doz in a half guppies, he now buys them once a week even though he claims he wants nothing to do with my ducks! Lol

The females are VERY noisy! I love calls though, wouldn't give 'em up for the world. Bean is quiet in the night as long as she can see me. I'm not sure about house hens AND ducks together though, especially with a roo in the home! They both have different diets, feeding habits and environmental needs, so it'll be a handful to try and cater to them both while still keeping the peace. I'm less worried about a scovy sitting on a hen and more worried of the hens pecking the bejeezus outta the duck, LOL!
