You can Google how to clip your ducks wings and all kinds of YouTube videos come up. It's really easy. I think it'll eventually get too fat to fly. I heard mascovies generally stop flying when they reach adulthood. My khaki campbells got their wings clipped once.But now they are fat and happy and can only fly a few inches off the ground.....

@ILOVEMYDUCKLING Bless you for caring so much about your duckling/duck he looks great. Here is the best chart I have found on explaining how to clip. This is the one I use for my Scovy's

Be sure to cut the ones in yellow I learned from experience they can still fly if you don't. and cut as far up as they show in the green too. Your an awesome person for wanting to keep your duck safe from harm.

Nope they don't stop once adults. Drakes sometimes but not always. depending on weight.

I'm somewhat hesitant to clip his wings because I feel it might be cruel on my part to do that to him

I have this image on my head of somebody grabbing me and breaking my arms

I guess I'll have to do it

I'm really concerned that he migh leave while I'm at work.

Hello my name is Diana, I've Been lurking around this forum for a while now

Around 5 months ago, I found a duckling in a very busy mall parking lot. He almost got ran over by several cars. He was very small and after looking for his family for about 2 hours to no avail, I took him home and he has been with me since. I know nothing about ducks, I don't even have pets but you guys have been my lifeline

I tried to follow as many tips from you guys as I could. My sweet one seems to be healthy and thriving (he/she is a Muscovy) but I need advice guys:
Up until around a month ago, he would spend most of the day inside the house and a few hours in the back yard. While on the back yard he would swim in the pool and walk around the grass a bit and then come back inside. If I had to leave for work, he would be on the back yard for around 4-5 hours until I come back home to let him in. The issue started around 3 weeks ago since he learnt to fly. He wants to spend more hours outside (which is fine with me

) but now he is flying away. He had done it 3 times and I'm afraid he might get hurt by a predator or some evil person out there. I can't keep inside the house all day since I have to work and now I'm worried and stressed out thinking that I will be back home and he will be gone or hurt.
How do guys handle your ducks when the start to fly?
Do you know if there is GPS that I can buy for him?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for rescuing him and giving him a great home. I hope you can keep him from taking off. From what I have observed via videos and people's experiences, wing clipping is painless if done right. All the folks here offering tips know what they are talking about.

It's not like you having a broken arm. More like having someone grab you and shave the hair off your arm. Upsetting maybe but not painful. Lol

It does not hurt if you do it right go right by the instructions. I have to do it to all my females my drakes [2] haven't ever flown away why would they want to they have their girls here lol But Muscovy's love to fly and I have read too many sad stories of members losing their Scovy's because they flew off and didn't come home. Very dangerous things out there to hurt them or they get lost. I've clipped one wing on each my ducks since I started 11 yrs ago and they all have been healthy and safe. Always clip after molt each fall when flight feathers are completely grown back in. You are not being cruel but being responsible for the safety of your duck. Be sure to give him shelter outside so he has a place to get in when he needs to rest or feels threatened.

When he is in the back yard, he usually stays on the edge of the pool or inside the pool. It is an above ground pool and I've noticed that he loves to be in high places.
When he is hot he flies to the porch and stays there. What kind of shelter do you recommend? Like a doggie house maybe?
The first time he flew away, he came back on his own like an hour later ( I was driving around looking for him)
The second time, I found him down the street sitting at the side road.
Third time (this morning) I drove around and he was on a neighbors front yard. They have a fountain and he was just hanging in there like nothing was happening lol
