I thought that was the case regarding their body not blocking any of their vision. Thanks for clarifying that. What a huge difference between the owl and pigeon vision. I reckon they were adapted based upon their diets? When you say birds or chickens rotate their eyes, are you referring to them moving their eyeballs in the socket? Kinda like we do? Like ours have muscles that move ours. My teensy Muscovies finches eyeballs move ever so slightly. It's cute.

Yup. Many birds (not all) have limited or non-existent eye movement.

Either way it was funny to watch my ducks watch the geese fly south.
I keep them all fed with treats all day long so they wouldn't want to join the geese.
They can only fly a few inches over the ground. So it would have been a long flight dragging their feet all the way south...haha.
I hand a female that loves to be fed by hand and petted. So they are fat happy ducks.

Hi all, here is the closest I will get to actually belonging on this thread... Yesterday was our first DOD (Duck of the Day) for this winter season. This is our temporary house duck program where we give the ducks a bath (once the winter sets in they won't get pools anymore, just a heated bucket they can stick their heads in.) And let them chill out with us in a nice warm house (lets us give them a good health once over) and dry off completely, spend the night in a dog crate, then rejoin their flock in the morning. It really isn't cold enough for the ducks to think it is a good idea yet, but ever since the time zone change Yvonne doesn't get to see the ducks except for about 2 minutes in the morning (and shortly she won't get that). And on the weekends. Ettie was elected based on the following criteria: 1) She is our least domesticated duck and needs all the one on one time possible. 2) She is done with her molt so doesn't have the emotional baggage that brings. Just before it was time for the ducks to go into their house she was snagged and brought in for a bath and some peas

Here you can see her sporting her white spot which is the only obvious difference between her and Tella. (There are several minor differences that we can see because we "know" them, but no one else can and even we can't see them if they are running across the yard without the other one close by.) Only problem with that spot... It is only there half the time. It was there when we first got them and at that time was the only way we could tell them apart but it disappears and comes back. I think that female Mallards/Rouens might have a breading time / off time phase, just like the Drakes, the difference is normally they look the same. In Ettie's case, one has a white spot and the other doesn't.

Ettie was fairly happy with her bath, but then when it was time to chill out in the living room, she was non-stop trying to plan her escape. She wanted to go out the back door and join her flock. Only problem was they were already tucked in. She wasn't scared at all, in fact she was kind of aggressive trying to nip us if we blocked her. We did get her to eat a couple worms, but mostly she just tried to go to the kitchen so she could go out the back door. We gave her about an hour then put her in her dog crate for the night. (We checked on her several times and gave her water and talked to her.) As I said above, she is our least domesticated. Kind of funny since her sister is MUCH more friendly went through the same upbringing and actually had to undergo minor foot surgery which was kind of traumatic. Well, here is a picture of Ettie indoors giving me the stink-face. Oh well, she'll get a couple extra worms today.

Awh man. I lovee reading everyone's stories, and seeing all the pics! xD I LOVEE THIS THREAD!...and if I could get a dollar for every hour I research everything pertaining to ducks.. I'd be a rich woman. With that being said..
My husband and I took Cookie and Cupcake out fishing with us at the river.. mind you, the river is in the city and I've been so afraid to bring them to big public places because of the risk factors.... However, it turned out better than expected!!

The wild ducks were soooo curious about them, they kept swimming around us and looking at them.. (cupcake didn't like that.. he was always on guard.. and hates other ducks) they stayed with us the entire time, until we moved to the docks (at which point I put them in the water because someone was walking two large dogs and I was just terrified they'd want a duck dinner)... they swam around.. went pretty far but came back.. of course the wild ducks came over a gain, swam up to them.. cupcake flipped and chased them away, they did a crazyyyy mating thing in the water, and I was so afraid Cupcake was going to drown Cookie.. but she was okay, and they did this crazy excited happy swim dance after, that was just the funniest thing to see... when we got ready to leave, they climbed back up on land, dried off and we put them in their carrier.. ahhhhhhhh OMGG did I mention how much I love these two angels?! The fact they stayed with us the entire time melted my heart!
